C-Sharps

Thanks Ken. I know about the two at Epps but what they are asking for them is more then they are worth new on the C-Sharps website. They are both the 1875 models - not worth as much as the 1874. I made an offer on the 45-100 but I guess I insulted them as there was no response. :rolleyes: I was hoping to find a dealer that would bring new rifles in on spec but that may be unrealistic on my part as they are expensive stock. Oh well. I might have to do the import scenario. On another thread someone mentioned an importer that was good to deal with but I can't remember the details. cheers

I am checking with a fellow who used to bring in a few and will get back to you if he still handles them. I take it you would prefer a'74 but may be interested in a '75 if the other is not available?
 
45/70...Both are great rifles, the shiloh will take min.18mths. to get unless you order 1 from Bill Goodman in Montana, he has a dedicated place in line.....C. Sharps are great and not as big a wait, you must order from them and get someone like Questar to do the im/exp. thing, no matter what, I think you will be happy with your new Sharps.
 
Starting price on C. Sharps(new) is $1700 for the '74, and around $1300 for the '75, Starting price for the Shiloh '74 is around $1700 as well, so I would go with these instead of a used one for more money or an Ital. copy.IMHO
 
C.Sharps

Can anyone advise me about which of these would be suitable for deer and hogs and which sigts to get? If I got a mid range tang what sort of front sights would I require? Is there a model there that would be ready to go?
 
Some says Shiloh Sharps are better, I have a C. Sharps 1874 50-140 with a no. 1 34'' heavy barrel (still to light for that caliber) and I am very happy about this rifle, the finish is great and so far it is fun to shoot. I guess both company are making great rifles.:)

Thanks for the heads up Canuck but a C-Sharps or a Shilo will inflict enough damage on my rifle slush fund let alone a $12K original. Actually doesn't that seem to be a just a wee tad high? :rolleyes:
 
Shiloh makes great guns, but advertises alot, sponsors events more, gives away guns for prizes, and seems to therefore get most of the press. C. Sharps are usually not as fancy as far as options go (but the price can still add up), I think the main benefit of the C. Sharps is that they use Badger Barrels, which are tops for BP and cast bullets.
Regarding sights...due to the rather curved trajectory of the big ctgs.,the best bet is a std. blade front sight and whatever barrel sight you prefer, and set it up for 100 yds., a vernier rear sight can be used at the same time and set it up for say, 200yds.. this set up works for a hunting gun....for a target gun, I would suggest a good Soule Vernier tang sight and a Lyman #17 front sight w/inserts as a minimum. Don't scrimp on these rear sights as some of them have a lot of slop in their adj. and you don't need that variable to contend with.
 
I find most vernier types have such a small aperature that their use in hunting is very restricted. I have been mulling over getting a rear sight similar to the Williams tang sight that used to be common on old Winchesters. A friend has such a sight on a 85 Winchester and it looks like it would be much faster to use than any Vernier I have seen. It would be set at 150 yards and be similar to a ghost ring.
 
There will be a C Sharps 75 in 45-70 for sale at the Bethune Sask shoot, north of Regina, on July 12 and 13th . Also likely to be a Pedersoli Roller in same cartridge. Both are set up with rear tang mounted verniers. propably a good many other items as well.
 
I was told the supply has caught up with demand in the States :eek:
A friend of mine has had a 1873 Shilo Sharps 45/70 listed at The Gunworks in Oregon for $2150, it's been on consignment there for 2 years and no takers.
