C02 BB Pistol enough for Small Game?

crosman 2240 with .22 16g JSB predator are a pretty good combo for small criter at short range.
I've shot 7 pigeons in the upper chest @10y the other day, 7 out of 7 fell to the ground like a rock. I was impress.

I use to go in the barn with my Condor ( 60 ft/lbs+ compare to 6 for the 2240 ) and I never get good result like that ( too much speed I gess )

I took grousses too this hunting season and the 2240 did realy good , even retire the .410 !!!!

I think a bone stock 2240 makes about 7.4 pounds, that is why it is illegal in the UK where air rifles are allowed to be up to 12 ft pounds, and air pistols are allowed only 6 ft pounds. With some tweaking a 2240 can make some impressive power, I have read of examples in the 30 ft pound range.

A 495 fps 22 cal pistol will humanely kill squirrels, rabbits and grouse - head shots only. I've taken dozens of ruffed and spruce hens with a Crossman pneumatic and a CO2 pistol. SOrry I don't remember the model numbers. CO2 is no good in the cold. I would definitely not try a BB gun. But that's just me

If you have a 22 powder burner, both CCI and Federal make cartridges with #12 buckshot in them. Meant for varmints and pesting at close range. Fairly quiet, no damage and 1000 fps. A lot of guys use them in their barns for pigeon control, without damaging the barn. Here is a link to the CCI ammo (federals are cheaper, but I like the CCI):

Give them a try.

CB shorts or longs at 710fps are stupid quiet as well.

What kind of accuracy does this BB pistol provide?

My experience with BB's is that they are very erratic and not accurate enough to punch paper let alone hunt!

Pellets are the only way to go, and spring powered is best for cold weather.

i don't know if they exist anymore but when I was a kid, a friend of mine had a ghatt (sp) gun that used "feathered" darts that would penetrate tree rats quite nicely. Had to push the barrel back to compress the spring and then loaded it with a single dart.I still have a can of those Bulldog pellets.

I would say I can smack a pop can most times out to 10-12 yards or so with it

I probably should have mentioned that I unfortunately can't discharge firearms where I live. Actually funny story on the subject, but my mom recently told me that our furry feline dragged a half-alive squirrel in through the cat door while I was at school only a couple days ago. Perhaps cats aren't always as useless as they seem?

In order to use a sub-500 fps air gun to kill game, IMHO, you have to be able to consistently make a head shot at those ranges. Even a chest-cavity shot isn't a sure game-getter. I know that on grouse or snowshoe rabbits, we wouldn't even try the shot if we weren't confident of a head shot. I have a (claimed) 900 fps. .22 cal pellet gun now, and until I can chrony it and try some shots for penetration, I wouldn't try anything but head shots.

Before I could buy real guns me and by brother had one of those mossy oak 405 fps bb guns each, never used pellets just bbs, and we killed many a tree rat with great accuracy. It was rare that they didn't die first shot.

get a airsoft rifle, mine is a 1:1 scale wood and metal AK47, upgraded so it shoots 450fps, it will crush a birds skull at 20 meters! and at 1000rpm, you dont even need to think about aiming lol, missing is rare

screw dewats, airsoft is a hell of alot more fun than a paperweight

I call B.S. on this.. an airsoft at 450 fps does not have even a fraction of the energy of even a steel BB at 300 fps. They also have horrific accuracy and will not give anywhere near the required precision.

If you want a sub 500 air pistol for small game look at the crosman 2210. It is a .22 7 shot repeater designed to look like a mid 90's smith and wesson. It packs quite a punch for a co2 powered air pistol. It shoots very tight groups out to about 30-40' you get full power out of the first 14 shots. A real co2 hog. Rare these days but if you ever find one in good condition pick one up.
