C02 Pellet Pistols and Partridge

So for the purposes of this conversation, an air pistol is a firearm and cannot be used for hunting.

Not quite.... or not quite that simple, anyway.

So you CAN hunt grouse with a pellet pistol...

But...

You can’t carry a pellet pistol while hunting deer.

At least that’s how it looks to me based on pages 23 and 24 of the summary.

That said I have done it and know plenty of folks who do it, never been wrist slapped for it.

Yeah Hoyt beat me to it. It’s too cold in Thunder Bay for co2 to be viable. You’ll get it all sighted in in the basement, then take it out on the hunt, and watch the pellet bounce off the bird. Or fall short.

Sling shot works if you don’t suck... like, uh... me.

I prefer Mouse farts, or the Hammond game getter. (Essentially firing a little necked down buckshot out of the hunting rifle you’re already carrying).

Here’s the game getter:

And a link to some mouse farts: https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1335340-Mouse-fart-recipes?highlight=Mouse+fart

My hunt gun is a semi. Rem 7400.....

Like I said earlier, I didn't have a copy of the regs handy. I stand corrected.

No... for the purpose of this discussion a sub-500 fps airgun CAN be used for hunting. A rifle over 500 fps is governed by federal firearms legislation, a pistol over 500 fps, is considered a firearm under federal statutes regulating "handguns" and is NOT allowed for hunting. Fortunately most pellet pistols are UNDER 500 fps, and may be used for hunting.

I carry a Benji EB-20 CO2 pistol in my pack when hunting deer and moose and have taken hundreds of grouse and hares over the years.

Mine too! Well, a 750, but close enough. Just hit the mag release so it drops a 1/4”, pull the bolt back and eject the deer round, then drop the mouse fart in and let the bolt fly.

Just remember to manually cycle the bolt after you shoot the grouse because the mouse fart won’t cycle the bolt of course.

the Hammond game getters work well just a PIA to load I Load round buckshot balls.
I put 000 buck through a .357 Lee sizer and used them in a .350 rem mag with 4 grs. of Titegroup no wading or Dacron. I used the cheapest 000 buck 12 ga. rounds I could find for the balls.
I found out later its illegal in Sask. to shoot game birds with a center fire rifle no matter what ammunition is used its still a center fire.
They do work good on gophers and you can carry a pocket full of them to speed up loading

I'm sorry for my ignorance, but what the heck is a "mouse fart" cartridge? A low velocity round chambered for the rifle?

Yessir. See here: https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1335340-Mouse-fart-recipes?highlight=Mouse+fart

Sometimes called parlor rounds. Different from just reduced loads, as the intent is to bring the velocity way down, and typically fire a non-standard for caliber bullet. Sometimes swapping out a pistol bullet for the rifle bullet... Or a swaged buckshot... I even tried using a .22cal airgun pellet out of a 223. (Don’t bother. Minute of barn door)

The powder gets swapped for for a fast burning pistol powder. Typically only 2-4 grains. You might need a little tuft of cotton or Dacron to keep the powder where you want it.

Thanks for the clarity!

Also used in suppressed weapons usually heavy for weight bullets like 180-220gr in a 7.62x39 with a can on it.Lay down and stay down.Harold
