As anyone damaged a mag while using it to support their rifle in the prone?

I did not question it at the time, but it did annoy me to no end when I someone told me this.

I have never seen it damage mags because they were rested on the ground, but I have seen the C7 have stoppages due to the mag being rested on the ground. They do not always occurr, but sometimes, this will cause issues.....

well why the hell would you do that???
improvised mono-pod - target shooters like it for distance as it helps steady things when your not so steady...has it's own issues though.

Boltgun

I call BS here, now I'm only a little 'ole civvy but I suspect my mates and I get more rounds down range competitively and training wise than a lots of fellas and I have yet to see using a mag as a mon-pod cause damage or a malfunction.

Call it whatever way you want. I have seen stoppages occur on a number of occasions on Military Ranges with the C7 because of just that....mag rested on the sandbag. As I stated, it does not happen all the time, but it does happen. Whether you believe it or not is your choice, but please do not try to undermine my or any other person's experience just because you "perceive" your experience as superior........

When I used to shoot BCRA, I did it with the metal 30 rd mags. Nobody would be dumb enouh to do it with the old Thermolds though, you would break the feed lips.

I'd suspect the mag or the ammo before the idea that the weight on the mag did it.

The CF issued Labelle Teflon mags - IF in good condition should rest into the upper and be held as well by the match catch.
The CF does teach shooters to mono-pod the mag - and in hundreds of thousands of rounds down range -- and watching millions - I don't think I have ever seen a stoppgae specifically linked to JUST the mag used as a mono pod.

We are zeroing our rifles, everyone adopts the prone. I plant my mag in the ground, get a natural point of aim, comfortable position, regulate my breathing and squeee - "Get your rifle of the ground, it damages the mags."
I would have been charged if the ARSO had seen the look on my face. It wasn't worth arguing, I can still get a good enough group unsuported.

Still, some peoples childrens...

It is called the prone un-supported position for that reason.....but resting a little does make a great deal of difference. That being said, I cannot say I've ever seen a mag damaged because of that, only stoppages caused by it....

I always understood it as dont use sandbags.

The counter argument is that even shooting "off the elbows" the rifle is supported;)

Shoot to Live Program. Prone unsupported/prone supported.....different....figured you would have remembered that Kev....

Good posts. I'll rest whatever I can, and always have. I remember being criticized by a coach for resting the mag, but always shot better doing it. I personally only had Thermolds break twice, and both on a range. Both time shooting (I'm sure) with the mag on a sandbag, never related the two issues, just thought '####ty mags'/beat out the double feeds, and bought/got USGI mags to replace them.

Still shoot off whatever gives me the best support available, including not off the mag, but as the situation demands, and have yet to encounter any problems.

I seem to recall that they would shout at us about resting the C1 mags on the ground but not the C7.

No expert on the C1, but I was told:

Resting the mag on the ground with the C1 created a pivot point, as the recoil wasn't straight (due to the angle on the spring into the but of the rifle).

Again, don't quote me on this, YMMV.

The Thermolds have a molded 'lip' that prevents the mag from going any farther into the magwell, even if rested on the ground.
I still have 6 thermolds going with no issues, and I rest the bases on the ground every chance I get. (knock on wood)

I've never had a problem resting the mag on the ground during Service Rifle prone matches or at any other time. As far as I know, everyone shoots that way with their AR15/C7's during the matches, including the military teams. I've yet to hear of a single problem  I suspect if a problem is encountered it can be traced to an iffy or bad magazine.
