With the A1 sights I am going to have to hold over for a 500 meter target. Can someone tell me how much drop I can expect? Plan on using PMC X-TAC 5.56 NATO AMMUNITION M855 FMJ, 62 GRAIN.

I am thinking it will be about 50". Is that a good guess?

Thanks everyone

If you are zeroed @ 100 yards you will drop about 65".

Hornady has a calculator on their website, you can enter all your specifics and get a more accurate number.

My daughter (a Bosun at HMCS York) shot NSCC at Connaught with me last year using a Colt Canada C8 running Hornady 62gr Steel Match. It shot like a house on fire out to 400m. At 500m, it got ugly. At 500 and farther out, you will be better served with a 20” barrel.

Back in 1993 the DCRA tried M Class, where you could shoot TR using a Service Rifle, which has since been folded in to the regular TR classes. I’m probably the only one who tried it in that particular set of rules. Anyway, I could crank the foresight on my C7 (and I mean C7: iron sights) down far enough to get me to 600. Farther back than that, I was pooched. It got even uglier.

It can be done, but it is very difficult. If you want to use irons, a flat-top with a good-quality detachable carrying handle (which can even be fitted with a National Match rear sight) would be a much better arrangement. It has a ranging elevation drum, so you can easily apply the correct range. It beats the hell out of cranking your foresight in and out with a tool and counting how many clicks you’ve come up from the bottom, and praying that you didn’t miscount.

Good luck and good shooting!

There is a way to shoot with a fixed sight setting at all ranges.

Zero at 400 yards.

At 100 rifle shoots 6 inches high. Just aim at a lower part of the target. easy to do fairly accurately.

At 200 rifle shoots 10 inches high. Just aim at a lower part of the target.

At 300 rifle shoots 9 inches high. Just aim at the same lower part of the target as at 200.

At 400 rifle shoots to Point of Aim.

At 500 rifle shoots 17 inches low. Aim at chin of fig 11.

Ruskies zero their AK's for 440m and tell their soldiers to aim for the belt buckle.

I am happy if i get all rounds on a 18"X22" target from prone unsupported.

Why unsupported? You're allowed to rest the mag on the ground as a mono-pod. That's why service condition shooters use 30/5 round mags. You'll find that with some practice, it's a very stable shooting position.

Shooting off the mag does work well. I even have L-plates on my mags which are great. Issue is when using rifles that are not conducive to the mag monopod.
