Hello,

I just registered on this site as some members from another website directed me here thinking that someone could help me.

I am building a clone of the C8 and I am trying to find some dimensions to the cut in the barrel right in front of the front sight block.

This link should give you an idea as to what I talking about. Image about 3/4 of the way down.

http://www.coltcanada.com/c8-page.htm

I am looking to find out the diameter of the barrel, how far in front of the FSB the cut starts, what it's diameter is, how long it is, and if the edge closest to the FSB is rounded.

If anyone knows where I can find these dimensions it would be greatly appreciated. Or if I should be posting this in one of the other forums please let me know. Thanks.

Tony.

Hi and welcome to CGN.

The barrel on the C8A2 looks like the same as the M4 barrel from the sight post to the muzzle. The web site says it is a heavy barrel, so under the hand guard the barrel is 1 inch in diameter.

The M-4 barrel is heavier in the section from the sight post to the muzzle than the original AR15/M16-style barrels (pencil barrels). The diameter of the cut section is the diameter of original M16-style so that the heavier barrel can still mount an M203 grenade launcher.

I dont have drawings to show the actual diameters and fillet diameters, but search the internet and check out AR15.com.

A few years back I tried to make an original C8 clone but I couldn't find a pencil 14.5" barrel. I ended up using a Bushmaster M4 style barrel. The upper has A1 sights with a brass deflector and forward assist.

Thanks. I actually ended up here by way of the Canada home town forum on AR15.com.

I'd have to agree with you that the outer diameter is probably the same as the M4 as visually it looks much the same.

As far as the cut in the barrel, the best guess I can make is that it's only about 1/2 to 1/3 as deep as the M4's 203 cut. I measured the cut on my M4 barrel and it measures 0.600".

All my scouring of the internet has not yielded much information. I was hoping to at least to find some good up close pictures of the C8A2 cut but I have yet to find any.

If all else fails I may just take my HBAR barrel to someone who can machine it locally so I can decide little by little how much to take off.

BTW, do you think I should post this question down in the Main Battle Rifles forum?

Cool, it got moved to the B&GR forum for me!

Here is a better idea of what I'm looking for.

What you are looking for is a 14.5 barrel with an M4 profile. All that means is that you have a groove where an M203 could be attached. Check out the Parts and Bits section on EE to pick one up

All the C8s I've seen are either the SFW model or the older model(of which I've seen 2 or 3) with skinnier barrel. I have never seen M4 M203 cuts on a C8. I'm not saying they don't make them because they obviously do according to Colt Canada's website, I'm just saying I haven't seen them out here.

Maybe this thing doesn't exist! It wouldn't be the first time a manufacturer marketed one thing and produced something else.

It just doesn't look like a typical M4 cut to me. Here's a (crappy) photo I took tonight of my M4. What stands out with the M4 cut from the C8 cut is that it looks like it starts a little further away from the FSB, it's got a visible taper, and looks deeper.

Maybe this C8A2 barrel is like the Loc Ness monster. Photographed, but never verified :)

Yeah,, I don't think the CF uses the C8A2,, only the C8 (with carry handle and short skinny barrel) and the C8A3 (flattop, mid length heavy barrel, aka the SFW).

Dave, I have seen a number of CC C8's with M4 profile barrels in the hands of LE Officers ...I have a few pics of a Donut eater buddy wielding one on a course...will dig it out ...

next time im in the shop ill get a few pics of the c8 we use today. it does have a heavy barrel and it does have the profile to mount the m 203. how do i post a pic and ill show you.

Here is a link to the CF Weapons poster, of all in-service small arms. No C8A2 on the poster. Police or other agencies may have acquired them from Colt Canada, but not the CF as in-service weapons.

And.... because its not on a poster (of "some" of the CF Small Arms), it means it doesent exist in CF inventory?

C8 (carry handle upper, pencil barrel), C8A1(flat top, pencil barrel), C8A2(FTHB), and C8A3(FTHB) are all designations given by DND. They've all been in the inventory. AFAIK, the diff between the A2 and the A3 are a slight differance in barrel lenght, furniture, and ambi charging handles, fire selector, and mag release.

Well,, I guess that's what I'm saying.
The C8A2 may be some in use, and in inventory, like the C8A1, but they are probably ones acquired for operational requirements, buy-and-try, and not brought into general service. Something like how the AR10 was acquired and fielded.

All this to say that there are still some kicking around of every variant, in service with different units. Even the original C8 for that matter.

Here's a monster sized pic from 01 Dec 2009.

The original C8A2 picture is of a LE sale or Dutch or Danish C8.

It is not a M4 contour barrel.

One of our LE members here that I took a pic of his carbine at a course.
