C8A3's covered in Rust!

Just attended Navy days in Victoria and had a chance to see the new enhanced naval boarding party team's display. They had two c8a3's with eotech sights that were very nice. Unfortunately, they were both COVERED in corrosion (orange rust).

As an ex-infantryman, I always cringe at the sight of rust on any weapon. What's the deal? Is it just impossible to keep the weapons from rusting out in the sal####er or is this a case of poor weapons maintenance discipline?
 
I hope you didnt expect the navy to keep something clean ?!? :p

I guess they dont care as much as us Infantry about their "tools"... Orange stuff on rifle = unacceptable and chargeable especially when publicly displayed.
 
It's not rust, it's sailor's gold.

I am surprised that the Navy weapons don't get a more durable finish than parkerizing considering the environment they are subjected to.

But they're not soldiers, they're sailors. (yes I know there are some excellent Navy shooters, don't get riled up).

I imagine the best looking weapons are RCAF. Out of the vault once a year for PWT 1, maybe.
 
What's worse, some rust or Joe taking the blade from his Gerber to get that shiny ring on the muzzle...

They probably had to get it "Inspection" clean for the show so they got rid of all the oil, because we all know that oil means dirty. ;)

Navy is not authorized to paint their guns, only CANSOF and some army units in Afghanistan were allowed.

I have seen a few rust bucket C7s and C8s. The rust was only on the barrel, front sight and other steel part. I did send a nastygram with pics to their units RSM :D
 
Not only did they get brand spanking new C8A3s for the the boarding parties, they didn't even bother to clean them before displaying them?

Navy's the Navy, I guess.
 
Probably got some sea spray on it, It dried up. Someone took a bore brush to it. Removed the finish and now it rusts every time.

But they should have cleaned it before display.

The bolt and small internal parts would not be visible to the OP, only the barrel which accounts for a small visible portion of the entire rifle that the OP said was "covered". I'm not trying to be argumentative, I'm just puzzled given the lack of details.
