Yesterday for the first time, i bought ammunition at Cabelas. This morning, I'm looking at my receipt and low and behold ... there is my full name printed on the receipt along with license type PAL .... AND MY PAL NUMBER!!!!
All I can say is WTF??? we need to put a stop to this crap! Other stores record your info but I've never seen such stupidity before. I was tired already and facing a 7 hour drive to get home so I didn't look at my receipt until this morning.
I'll be calling the manager of the store today. We need to get this changed, it has a potential to affect our security.

Had to dig through my recycling bin. Last week was my first time at Cabelas. Usually I go to Bass Pro. Bass Pro gives a 2% cashback as well as they are old school and record your info in a binder. Cabelas doesn't offer 2% cashback, I asked if my Bass Pro card works so I could collect cashback and they said no, even though they are the same company. Cabelas swipes or scans your PAL which makes it "faster". Low and behold my name and PAL # are on the receipt!

Won't be shopping at Cabelas anytime soon until they offer the 2% cashback.

What province?
They would have to have scanned your PAL to obtain the info for which you would have had to hand your PAL over to them?
I've purchased lots of ammo from Cabelas (and other stores) in Alberta and have never had to do more than flash my PAL enough for them to see a valid expiration date.

This goes against PIPEDA

https://www.priv.gc.ca/en/privacy-topics/privacy-laws-in-canada/02_05_d_15/

I think you legitimately have the ability to submit a claim

https://www.priv.gc.ca/en/contact-the-opc/

I am more concerned about someone finding an errant receipt and using the info for illegal purposes. How about mail order scams etc. You give the vendor "your name" and " PAL number" and make a pick up in the parking lot arrangement. I can see a problem here.
For those interested, it was Cabelas in Ottawa. I told them I would follow up in one week.
I'm not concerned about discounts but I sure as heck am concerned about guarding my personal information as best as I can.

Guess we're lucky (so far. . . ) out here in NB. No Cabelas (they closed one here in 2017) and BP just reads your PAL, doesn't make any note of info (yet). Records not required here except for RPALs, nothing for ammo. LGS is the same - they still check my PAL even tho I'm in there every couple weeks buying whatever ammo is on sale. Never too much . . .

this is the specific section of PIPEDA that they are going against

ttps://www.priv.gc.ca/en/privacy-topics/privacy-laws-in-canada/the-personal-information-protection-and-electronic-documents-act-pipeda/p_principle/principles/p_use/

the issue is that cabelas is principally a US company and its likely that all corporate policies are made in the US and trickled down. (i have seen this 1st hand)

Canada's privacy legislation is actually much stronger than the US.

I really think you should contact the Gov. For once they are actually on our side.

Thank you for the information. I told the manager during our phone call this morning that I would follow up in one week. Then, if nothing has been done, I'll raise proper hell with them through pipeda and the the folk in Miramichi. Somebody in Miramichi or in the provincial CFOs office should have caught this a long time ago.
As far as an American company operating in Canada ....... their Canadian operation is subject to operating under Canadian law if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks for letting everyone know . what a bunch of Morons . first class Morons . I couldn't tell you how many times I have seen people leave a store and either drop or throw their receipt on the ground outside the store . could you imagine if some criminal element type person had found your receipt on the ground and you answer the door of your home the following day and end up getting beaten and robbed or even killed due to the sheer stupidity of those who run Cabela's . it shows you how stupid some management is nowadays .

The Canadian division operating in Canada is 100% under Canadian law. My guess is that it’s an American writing the process and they just don’t know the Canadian law.

This is what I’ve seen with my former employer. It’s not done out of malice, just ignorance to the local laws.

Hopefully your compliant will reach the right people and they will take action. If not, getting A registered letter from the federal Gov has a way of getting to the right people pretty quick :)

Yup Cabela's records all your info on their low tech unsecured computers, not to mention on the store copy receipt they keep... so... not very private or very secure. Probably not the best idea nor does it seem to be legally required, but that's what they do.
