Cabelas ammo ....

The Horror..........
Rob

You might think it is nothing but it is very much on the edge of a security breach. Imagine if it was your info and some ner-do-well got YOUR info and ordered up a firearm using the curbside delivery. No need to check your PAL because after all, they just verified the info with Miramichi .......... suddenly, not so funny anymore.

The ones to worry 'bout having all our info and where abouts, is the gov't.

They have the manpower to take away our belongings, legally.

They don't even have to wait till it's dark, or we're away.

Yesterday for the first time, i bought ammunition at Cabelas. This morning, I'm looking at my receipt and low and behold ... there is my full name printed on the receipt along with license type PAL .... AND MY PAL NUMBER!!!!
All I can say is WTF??? we need to put a stop to this crap! Other stores record your info but I've never seen such stupidity before. I was tired already and facing a 7 hour drive to get home so I didn't look at my receipt until this morning.
I'll be calling the manager of the store today. We need to get this changed, it has a potential to affect our security.
I just returned from purchasing ammo in person from Cabela's. Showed my PAL to the outfitter, a visual, no info taken. On the sales receipt it says, "Verify Pal: YES."

Since Cabela's Canada use the same corporate wide system, how is it that you had to provide your full PAL info on a ammo purchase? Are you in Ontario?

Yes, Ontario ...... Ottawa.

The cashier scanned the card. I've made purchases at other stores (not cabelas) and there were no issues. I'm interested to hear their excuse next week. I still think printing my info on the receipt is wrong. Yes, I know, the Gov't keeps track and while I don't agree with that law, I will respect it because it is the law.

Ah yes, that silly Ontario law that is out of Cabela's hands. While I fully disagree with a ammo purchase log, I hear many retailers in Ontario keep a paper ledger behind the counter. That in my opinion is a big privacy concern. At least at Cabela's you would need a computer logon to see the info and that info would only be available to managers. Better than a book lying around behind the counter. You can also destroy your receipt rather than just tossing it.

Abbotsford cabelas scans your pal. Only bought one gun there. I would prefer to buy private or ee. Flash the pal no scanning. Have a few friends that reload hi energy rifles. Prob over the 10,000 Jules. Have advised all
Of them not to buy there reloading equipment from cabelas. My understanding is the rcmp can ask for the records. It is up to the store owner to make the decision to surrender them or the rcmp can get a warrant. I very much doubt cabelas would tell the rcmp to pound sand. They will probably surrender all information asked for and more. Pretty easy to search threw see who buys a lot of different ammo or specific ammo. Not a place i buy from any more.

On the topic of gov't grabbing records from corporations, check this one out --

htt ps://globalnews.ca/news/6036682/cra-underground-economy-home-depot/

The CRA wanted to mine all Home Depot credit card holders for unpaid taxes. Home Depot told them to pound sand, CRA went to court and won. Anyone who has ever used a Home Depot CC now has all their transactions sitting with the CRA.

Makes you think twice about using any sort of corporate marketing card, or Air Miles, or whatever.

I guess that you have never lost a receipt .....

Seems that their is a level of misunderstanding in my comment about Cabelas ......
Yes, they are required to keep records under canadian law. While I do not agree with that law, until it is changed, I will continue to follow it.
The real thing at issue is Cabelas printing all my personal information onto a receipt ...... the record of any firearm related transaction should be kept secure ....... printing info on a receipt is not secure!

That's another reason to buy from an independent store, luckily we have one in Town, (and a Cabalas), My first choice is the smaller independent store for anything. Cabalas rarely has what I'm looking for or decent prices.

Yeah, most big box places keep it in a binder and lock it up with the ammo.

Time was very limited so I stopped at cabelas ..... never again. If I would have had the time, I would have gone out to the old co-op in north gower. They too follow the laws but aren't stupid and careless about it.

Not any of the important ones. Sometimes I will pass along hunting/gun magazines (paper kind) that I have subscribed. I remove the address labels because I would never know where the magazines will end up. Any sensitive correspondence goes through a shredder first including the envelope with the return address. A little over the top? Perhaps but it only takes a moment to keep my info private.
