Cabela's no longer lists SKS's on line

My guess there will be another sale on Boxing day as well however there new parent company Bass Pro does not deal in surplus, perhaps they are aligning with corporate policy?

I never even considered that. I'd say that's probably more likely the reason than my earlier suggestion. I'll bet we're going to see even more sales on them come boxing day as they try to blow through the remaining inventory. I don't really need another one but who can say no to a good deal right?

They just don't sell around here in Central NB. It took Sussex, NB CT 4 years to move 10 SKSs and 5 Mosins. There is still one Mosin there at 169 and its not moving. Savage Axis fly off the shelf, Expensive Henrys and Cheap Mil Surplus sit.

Probably has to do with the calibre restrictions in the game laws in this province. Unless you're a member of a gun club, you just won't get the use out of an SKS that you would with a .22 rimfire, .22 centrefire, or shotgun.

.223 is very popular with a lot of the people I know around here.

I'm not generally a fan of big box stores either but I've only had good experiences at the Cabelas in Barrie. The staff at the gun counter were knowledgeable, helpful and courteous even when they were really busy during a sale. They took the time to let me inspect each SKS they had on the rack before I bought one (gift for my dad, had to get the nicest one). They earned my business there.

The guy at cabelas in abbotsford said Friday morning on black Friday they had 500 sks when I went Sunday around d noon they were all sold out.....

At 189 and 500 qty. That's almost 100, 000k in sks sales. There has to be a demand for them.

100,000K in sales of a rifle they don't make money off of. Which is probably why they want to stop carrying them. The SKS is the nachos of the gun retailers. Only meant to bring people in. The Beer (Ammo & accessories) is where the real profit is.

Like others have said Gun Sales have been through the roof this year and SKS sales are a big ticket item this year. But I think the reason they are removed is simple.

Bass Pro Shop Bought Out Cabela's. Bass Pro does not sell SKSes so why keep something Bass Pro doesn't sell.

No one knows what is going to happen with Cabela's now that Bass Pro owns it.

Well, I ordered 2 SKS on Black Friday. Only one is confirmed shipped coming this Friday!

It took 2 week for them to get their act together and ship out 1 rifle, and I have no word on if they are going to honor the purchase of 2 I made online.

There was like 70 still available online at the time I ordered 2 SKS's but I talked to Cabela's yesterday and they said they do not think there was stock enough to honor my order!

Wow....not a very good first time experience with Cabela's.

So you think they should have the exact same inventory in both stores? That's what Best Buy/Future Shop did, and we all know how well that turned out.

Amazon and online sales killed BB/FS, don't think there's that much danger in the Cabela's/Bass Pro deal.

Future Shop salespeople used to hound you for those extended warranties, I stopped going in there because they were total a$$hats.

Relax, more are coming in. Cabelas sold tons of them in the last while along with crates of ammo. Someone mentioned beat up rifles. Some rifles are in better condition than others but they are surplus rifles at $189.00 so no one should whine too much. Which leaves me to say, don't like it, don't buy it, move on.

Last thing I read was Bass Pro was leaving Cabelas as a stand alone subsidiary. Way too much brand loyalty in the US to mess with that.

Well that may be the case for now. But it creates more competition between the two. I think it will happen slowly but eventually it will be merged into BP. It costs more money to have two supply chains with different personnel doing the same job. So for the first couple of years only the stuff behind the scenes will change. The retail section will remain the same until they are ready to take them over completely. Think of BB and FS.

Or. Cabela's will act as a specialist/brand store for BP with the same products at the same price. For example Loblaws, Superstore and Zehrs are the exact same thing with a different theme but with the same products. Some stores are smaller than others but they are only different in name. It's the illusion of choice from competition when they are all the same company.

Also if not corporate policy it could be a supply chain issue. Perhaps their supplier has raised prices over their acceptable price point for profit, makes no sense ordering a product say at $225 which they would have to sell at $300+ if they previously bought them at hypothetical $125 for example. A conservative retailer will allow the market to adjust then relist the product at the higher price point. This is possible also is discontinuing surplus rifle surplus rifles to align with bass pro corp policy. The 3rd option is that the large retailer has inside information about future government decisions to "Grinch" the Holidays.

Don't forget No Frills in there. Price and target demographic also separate them all. They can dress it up, jack the prices, put it in a higher income area, and call it Loblaws. Cut the window dressing, drop the prices, put it with a dollar store or money mart, and call it No Frills.

I personally have always been partial to Cabela's. As a kid there was a local shop which acted as a small retail/mail order location for Cabela's. Go grab a copy of the new catalogue and spend hours deciding what hunting gear I wanted when I was older... and what cool fishing stuff I was going to order.
I picked up one of the Black Friday SKS's, which showed up this week. I haven't pulled it apart yet, but it's in pretty good shape upon initial inspection. The stock fitting on the forend definitely looks like someone had finished a bottle of vodka before putting it on. Looks like a Tula 1955r, but doesn't have any obvious refurb markings. Bluing is pretty well intact, short of the couple of rust spots where the wood meets, and the spot where the serial is hand scratched into the gas tube.

A buddy of mine works at Wolverine, he tells me that the store cost for an SKS ranges from $80.00 to $120.00, so selling a $200.00 they are still making a good margin on the SKS.
