Cabelas Rem700 package

The cae is about $20, and the scope maybe $75
So, the two questions are:
1. Is a 700 DM a good deal at $500ish....YES, not bad
2. Do I want to spend $75-$95 on stuff I'll not use or have to upgrade anyways......NO

Ya but crappy extras aside 600 for a brand new rem 700 .308 is still a wicked price. Guys are selling used 700's on the ee for this price with several hundred rounds thru. It's a good gun that will shoot pretty close to any savage Stevens marlin or other rifles that are hundreds more, not to mention you can upgrade the bejesus out of it to turn it into anything you want, can't say that for the others.

They might be Remington 700's for more than that advertised price, but they certainly are not the SPS version of the Remington 700.
There is a huge difference too.
Weatherby had a pkg deal a few years ago with the Vanguard line and was an entry level deal for marketing purposes and for new shooters...well still more marketing than anything else.
The deal with Rem700's is there are more options available to the consumer if that makes some people happy.

A couple of years ago I bought an entry level of 700 SPS in 30-06, the rifle was a disaster, could not get it shooting consistently no matter what I did, replaced it with a 25 years old Browning, problem solved. I think Remmys have some production quality control issues and buying an entry level rifle only makes it worse.

If not an SPS, then what model would it be? Think it would be a decent starter package?

If that's what you want then ya that's a good price, the scope take it as what it is, will it do the job for hunting? For sure, if your looking to hit long range precision stuff, then you might want to hold out. I'm saving my pennies for a Remington 700 XCR Tactical Long Range. For a couple hundred dollars more you can go with a VTR also very nice. Just the rifle and hard case for $599 is a hell of a deal IMO :)
