I drove past the site last summer (Aug 07) and all I saw was dirt, and a sign announcing the opening that fall. not a bit of work on the building had been done. I rememeber thinking that, if Bass Pro had an issue ADDING French language to their product, what a pain it would be for Cabelas to CONVERT to French.[hearsay]
Last I heard there was going to be a very large mall built there - bigger than the West Edmonton Mall. It would be big enough to accommodate a Cabelas and I believe that was the original intent, but the rumours are that something has come up since then to make them reconsider. Like choosing a province without a compound sales tax or restrictive language laws as a foray into the Canadian market.
[/hearsay]
Of course, these rumours may have been started be frightened sporting goods store owners that are about to get a huge frickin' dose of reality in terms of pricing and customer service.
I would drive from my home in TO to go shop there! heck! I FLY to Minneapolis then drive 45 minutes to shop there! The only reason I can think of why they chose Montreal would be based on their mail order business - i.e. from where are most of the Canadian orders originating? Without any statistical data to back up what I am hypothesizing, a relativley large group of outdoorsmen and a very healthy outfitting industry may support this.
If Montreal is a target market, I think they'd be better off on the side of the 417 or 401 - like Casselman or Lancaster. Or maybe Cornwall where there is a border crossing very close by.
I know most of us nut-jobs would be willing to overlook a mere 2-hour drive, and probably more.
