Cabelas store in Montreal

Hmmmmm...a 45min drive Vs a 7hrs drive.

I made a trip to Sauble Beach with my two daughters and one of their friends last summer having no idea we would pass right by the Bass Pro Shop on the way. Well, about 20 min before we got near the store, I open my stupid mouth and told the girls " NO MORE STOPPING for the next 3hrs!!! " until I saw the Bass Pro Shop store and immediately tried to exit , but the 3 girls layed into me yelling " NO MORE STOPPING FOR 3 MORE HRS!!!" so I never got to stop and ck. it out LOL Me and my big mouth, so I really am hoping Cabelas does open soon.

My buddy was in Mirabel not to long ago, and said there is still a sign advertising a Cabela's coming soon.:D

They are working the land as we speak. The area was one big forest and now it's been opened up for the project. It can be very easily seen from the highway 15 on the west side after the Blainville exit.

Last I heard there was going to be a very large mall built there - bigger than the West Edmonton Mall. It would be big enough to accommodate a Cabelas and I believe that was the original intent, but the rumours are that something has come up since then to make them reconsider. Like choosing a province without a compound sales tax or restrictive language laws as a foray into the Canadian market.

Of course, these rumours may have been started be frightened sporting goods store owners that are about to get a huge frickin' dose of reality in terms of pricing and customer service.

I drove past the site last summer (Aug 07) and all I saw was dirt, and a sign announcing the opening that fall. not a bit of work on the building had been done. I rememeber thinking that, if Bass Pro had an issue ADDING French language to their product, what a pain it would be for Cabelas to CONVERT to French.

Now that they have a presence in MB, they can do the conversion slowly, and it won't impact the bottom line as much in a single quarter or FY.

All that aside, I think a store like BPS or Cabelas would be perfect for the Greater Montreal area, as I think it would not only be an attraction for the local sportsmen, but you will lilkely find the Americans (New Englanders) coming up cause it would be closer than any US store.

The only reason I can think of why they chose Montreal would be based on their mail order business - i.e. from where are most of the Canadian orders originating? Without any statistical data to back up what I am hypothesizing, a relativley large group of outdoorsmen and a very healthy outfitting industry may support this.

If Montreal is a target market, I think they'd be better off on the side of the 417 or 401 - like Casselman or Lancaster. Or maybe Cornwall where there is a border crossing very close by.

I know most of us nut-jobs would be willing to overlook a mere 2-hour drive, and probably more.

I would drive from my home in TO to go shop there! heck! I FLY to Minneapolis then drive 45 minutes to shop there!

Really, I think the reason that Cabelas got QC and BPS got ONT is that BPS had a deal to open a store in Buffalo, but got CN approval first. They have some kinda deal where they can't have too many stores in one area, and both Cabelas and BPS can't have a store in the same city/are/region unless it has a minimum # of ppl. (just an unsubstantiated fact I read on another board).

i dont understand why Ontario doesnt have a Cabelas or SIR. Bass pro is the worst store ever for service....espessially in the hunting department.

i'd rather drive to montreal to cabelas also instead of the 45 min drive to basspro. Basspro lost my business when I had to wait 30minutes just to get a box of .223 shells out of the cabinet. That place is so understaffed its not funny. Half if not 3\4 of the staff havent the slightest clue about the products they sell.

Last year when I placed an order at cabelas, I asked the lady on the phone if she had an update for me on the calbelas store opening in Montreal, she said she didnt know anything except it would be open in 2008, I havent heard anything about it since, I hope they didnt change their mind or anything...

Placed an order with Cabelas last week. We talked about the Montreal store but I did not ask when it would open. I asked if the mail orders for Canada would come from Montreal or the States. He did not know but said he sure hopes they come from Montreal.
