Caldwell Lead Sled Solo to sight in AR

Urban prone at 300? Neat, we should talk about where and why when we get together next.

You never know when you will need to make a mid range hit from under a car. It was in a match at the BCRA Tactical Rifle comp years ago. It effed over a few people and I decided I should try to be prepared vs lucky bolt or gas gun.

Aight, thanks for the incite, ya'll. I think I'll pass on the rest.

I have a few bags I'll stick to them.

Just curious, I shoot prone supported the way I recall doing it in the military. Handguard resting on a sandbag. Do you think that's the way to go, or do you use a rear sandbag as well?=

I shoot prone supported off the mag, again like I do in competition.

I can't see the point in zeroing a scope under competition conditions...I want my rifle zero to be a precise as possible, regardless of what kind of shooting I will be doing

So how does your sled rested zero compare to your zero without. Does it stay the same or is it different when the nut behind the trigger is supporting the rifle?

The variation is very minor for me. I've also never had a cracked stock or broken scope, then again I don't load the sled enough to completely eliminate recoil, just enough to mitigate it.

As I stated above I only use it on hard kicking rifles .375 H&H + and then only for the intial sight in. Fine tuning can then be done from field positions. For me shooting an shoelace busting caliber from the bench is a sure way to develope a flinch that then takes me hundreds of rounds of remedial work to eliminate; once my lizard brain associates shooting with pain, it takes a lot of convincing otherwise... YMMV

No difference....though zeroing off of the sled in my experience produces better results since the groups are smaller.

I really dont understand what point you are driving at here? I don't know anyone who zeroes there rifle from a competition type shooting position. The group size would be bigger, making a zero harder to get.

When zeroing nothing touches my hand guard. When shooting nothing touches my hand guard if it can at all be avoided, as I know it will and it has been proven to cause huge POI shifts.

The group of people who zero from the positions they will use in competition are the same people who seem to win everything at competitions.

That's why they make free float handguards

Not everybody has the option of FF handguards. I don't know of any downsides outside of costs but some groups don't believe the benifits are worth that cost. That being said I regularly get outshot by guys without FF handguards. :)

As for the sled and no change in POI, if it works for you og go with it. I can't help think that it is due to the light recoil of the AR-15. When hard kickers are employed I would fully expect to see a difference.

Regardless, I would say a sled is not worth the cost, at least for me. I'm very satisfied with estabishing my initial zero from prone.

But this thread is specifically about ar's...not hardkicking rifles....

I can't be certain, but I think virtually all ar's can accept ff handguards

To me, if it is an issue with hard kickers why bother with an AR. It also makes intuitive sense to me to zero in condidtions as close to what you will be shooting in as possible while still being stable.

I said everyone, not every rifle. Gunnerlove can't add a FF tube to the rifle he shoots in cometition. At least not the one issued to him. Don't know much about his personal AR.

It's guys shooting those rifles that have one every one of our matches so far this season if I recall correctly. I am confident (pending proof otherwise of course) that zeroing an AR without a FF tube with a sled rest would result in a different POI off the rest.

Anyway, it works for you which is great. No reason for you to not use it. I just don't see the benefit over a solid prone position zero so I would not recommend it personally.
