Is the metal used a good grade? I was thinking of buying one of these from Cabelas.

Portable and durable, it's a long-range shooter's dream. Gong is made of extra-hard, industry leading AR-550 steel to withstand years of bullet impacts from all rifles and handguns. Free-standing steel frame and heavy-duty chains suspend the target 18" above the ground. Frame and gong system disassemble for compact transport. Entire package weighs only 25 lb. For maximum life, shoot at a minimum distance of 100 yards with impact velocities less than 3,000 FPS. Gong dimensions: 10"D x 3/8". Frame: 33"H x 38"W.

.....you would be amazed at how easy and cheap it is to buy some 5/16 or 3/8 chain a few bolts and a pipe blind.... There was one of them fancy gong things at at a store up here a while back for $200-300??... I built my gongs for under $50 with a few pieces of free scrap metal and a trip to princess auto.

Get any peice of 3/4 inch steel and have a welding shop welde on 2 pieces of 24inch chain. They usually do it for free. Then go to home depot and by 4, 48 inch pieces of half inch gas pipe for the legs... It all comes threaded. Its actually in the plumbing section. You will need 2 half inch T's, and 2 half inch 90's. then buy 2 threaded 2 inch peices also half inch of course and one 36 inch piece for the cross member. All this will cost under 50 dollars and you will have the best portable target and stand ever. Because the legs are attached by threading them in, you can adjust them for uneven ground at the 90's and the T's. The unit can easily be unthreaded for transport if you have a car. Its light, and if you shoot a leg or a cross member you can change it on the fly with an extra piece for 4 bucks. PM me if you need more help. everyone that has ever seen this set up has gone and bought the parts right away. Its Awesome ! For $134.99 ...f**k Cabellas !

... Oh if you shoot your chain , at Canadian tire they have extra links with a threaded piece in the middle. They come in packs of 2 for $3.50, just pack a couple of those in your kit and put your chain back together if you get a flyer. Good luck and enjoy !

Has anyone tried using steel cable instead of chains? At out local club we have a gong but people keep trying to be cute and see if they can hit the chain instead of the gong, which ruins it for anyone coming afterword. So rather than replacing the chains constantly i was thinking maybe steel cable would be able to take the impact better without being destroyed.

Excellent idea, thanks.

What they used at our local range was an old claw off of an excavator bucket. It has very thick hard steel and when it's filled with water the first shot to hit it is pretty spectacular

+1

I have a 6x6 inch 1/4" steel plate we wanted to make a cheap "gong" out of since I got it free off my dad's ranch. We just couldn't figure out how to make a stand that could easily be transported. This is perfect!

It took me 3 trips downtown over a couple weeks to figure out that simple little stand. I wanted everthing to be cheap, strong, portable, adjustable and easily replaced. To find it at Home depot as material that is regularly stocked was fantastic ! I love spreading the word about that little stand. It makes shooting long range that much more convenient. For the money, My Dad and one of my good friends and myself all built 3 each. We set them up at all distances out to 1400 yards. Its awsome ! Glad i could help a couple fellow CGNers ... Enjoy !

i have had good luck with rubber bungee tie downs.bullets can go through but it won't destroy the bungee. i also made my frame from threaded gas pipe from Home depot, and bought gongs from Matt Moser here on nutz

We use scrap grader blades, held to the steel frame by the cloth tie down straps truckers use to secure loads. Bolts are welded on the back of the target, then a flat iron clamps the strap to the steel. These straps can take a lot of shots before they fray. Ours are more than 10 yr. old, and badly weathered, but still hanging on. Chains only take a few hits. Worn grader blades can be had for free at most roadbuilders or R.M. maintenance shops.
