Caldwell Magnum Rifle Gong question

I have that gong. We shot it with a 338 win mag at 75y, not a scratch. I've shot it with .223 and 308 FMJs at the same distance, no problems there.

The chain is the week spot. We ended up replacing it with a steel cable, that we hope will bend around a bullet if hit. I think its a decent product.

Unless your talking about qt or ar series steel it won't matter how thick it is bullets will still deform the steel and crater it

I honestly cannot say what the exsact steel that i use is. I just have gone to the welding shop a dozen times and tell them im shooting at it. Ive never had a regular hunting bullet break the suface and im shooting a 7 mag. But the stuff there giving me is 3/4 inch and its free from there scrap pile. The largest piece has bin 18x18 inches. im sure if you fire a FMJ it will make a nice crater.

I went to a few different places in P.A. and couldn't get enough threaded pipe to make a stand so I bought some PVC and made one. I won't glue the legs in so if they get shot (and shattered I presume) they will be a cheap replacement. I'm going to narrow the top piece where the T's are and get the inside legs closer to the outside.

It only takes a minor pitting on the surface to create some pretty bad deflections . I have one of those gongs and like the posts above the weak link is the chains. do some research shooting steel targets that aren't ar 500 etc can be real dangerous at any range . i have seen 1/2 inch ar 500 plate that have become concave from pistol ammo after several thousands of rounds.

lol nice , im sure that will work fine. I personally went to home depot once and they were out of the steel pipe. I mentioned it to the staff, the guy apologized because they didnt have it and said it sould have bin restocked. they jumped right on it and they had it back in with in 2 weeks.

Thanks. I was thinking of making the legs into 1 or 2 foot sections to make it even easier/cheaper to replace pieces and then I could transport most of it in a gym or duffel bag.

If your not getting any craters on the face of your target from rifle rounds , I would have to say that your lucky and got some ar400 or higher . I sell ar 500 targets and your really lucky they gave some up to you
