Calf killers in the yard

For me it's tricky as they are an animal I respect and so out of respect I don't like killing off pups directly or indirectly but at the same time I understand the need to keep them in check. So if landowners need it or like this instance they are in danger of killing calves I will.

I hear ya. Squirrels around here are a real menace & actually ate the top of my fuel tank in my truck! Cost me OVER $1000 to buy a new tank & have it installed! So, squirrels only get a pass during nesting season, outside of that it's game on...

^red squirrels never get a pass, don’t care that they’re “fur bearers” they will burn down your house. Maybe the black and greys are different down your way.

I’ve never lost a calf or dog to a coyote. Have shot over 4000 coyotes so who knows, maybe I saved someone’s lap dog.

What's funny is we really haven't had that much issue either. 1200 cows in 5 different pastures and we only had officially lost one to coyotes until this year when we lost 4 for sure.
From what I gather from other folks once they start to figure out how to catch calves your in for a rough ride.

Coyotes are a killer of opportunity, if they come across an easy meal they go for it. A calf, dog or cat are prey, I shoot them when ever i get the chance around my farm.

One feller up in the hills claims to have lost 14 calves to coyotes as of last week. A friend of mine does predator control work and has never been busier. Lot of hobby producers have predator problems and are ill equipped to deal with it, and the insurance inspector is an old deadbeat. By the time he gets out for a look, the calf is 3 day old scat.
