Howdy, I have a S&W 586 that is shaving lead. Lead is splashed on the front of the cylinder and filling the rifling lands.

I sent it to an Edmonton gunsmith on a recommendation. He kept it for a year, said he replaced a part, the issue was fixed and charged me $100. I have put about 100 rounds through it since it was returned and now have the exact same leading issue I started with.

Anyone out there who can recommend a good S&W revolver gunsmith in the Calgary area who could help me out?

Thanks,

Clint

splashed on the front of the cylinder and filling the rifling sounds more like you have a leading issue the then a shaving one. Are you shooting really hot (or undersized) cast bullet loads? Shaving would suggest solid bits of lead blowing out the side on firing. I've been beside someone who's revolver shaved and it was like being sandblasted, except for the bits that actually cut my face. That one went to ARMCO when gunnar was still there and not as busy as he later got.

If it is shaving you will need to find someone who can time the cylinder, or possible polish the forcing cone. I don't know who in that area to suggest.

Murray Charlton Enterprises is the S&W warranty centre. I recently had some warranty work done on my Weatherby Vanguard, and I was happy with their service.
They are on Vancouver Island though, so you would have to ship it.

Very good, thanks gents. Yes, it is shaving lead, a noted it is like being sandblasted if your in the vicinity! The slugs are bang on measurement wise and not hot at all. Clint

Murray Charlton. Give him a call, he sometimes comes to the Calgary Gunshow. You could possibly send it back with him. He's the only one I would trust in Western Canada to work on S&W.
