im just about to get my PAL and im looking to soon get into long range shooting. the tactical type shoots im really interested in.

which is a good long range shooting range in the calgary area? i believe sibbald flats has a 900m, but is there anywhere closer to the north of the city/cochrane area?

initially im just getting a .22, but once ive saved a little i will be buying something like a remington 700 police in .308.

i was a tactical firearms officer in the UK, allbeit much shorter range, but im liking the look of the BCRA type tactical shoots. is there similar things in the calgary area? or the milsim type shoots too?

is there anywhere that i could tag along and observe for a while to get an idea of how things work? maybe learn how to spot for people?

many thanks
Scott

Some web sites you may want to check for more information are:

http://www.albertarifle.com/default.htm
http://www.crpc.ca
and,
http://www.cdtsa.org

The Alberta Provincial Rifle Association has beginner's days, which are a good source of information on long range shooting.
The Calgary Rifle and Pistol Club has an indoor range for handguns and 22 rifles. Since you are getting a 22 first, that may or may not be suitable for you. It is in the northeast part of Calgary.
The Calgary & District Target Shooter's Association has an outdoor range in the southeast of Calgary. The rifle range is only 100 yards though.
In addition, there have occasionally been meetings by Calgary Gun Nutz. Watch, and you may see one coming up.

sibbald is less than half an hour from the hiway 1/hi-way 22 petro-can station, how much closer do you want?
sorry if that sounds harsh but we have access to one of the best range facilities around....

thanks for the replies. yeh sibbald isnt too far, but somewhere north of the city would be even better as im a fair bit north of cochrane.. but thats fine, ill just go there..

im sure i wont even be looking for anything near 900m any time soon, but nice to know where to go when i get good enough to take the long range shots..

im ok for shooting my.22, i live out in the country and have land to shoot that on, hence my desire to get the .22 first as i can use that easily..

ill look at those sites as mentioned, but does anyone know of any specific type of comps like the BCRA tactical one that go on around here? or ive heard of some that are in ranges that are like small deserted towns, any like that around here?

thanks for the info guys..

The CSRA shoots Service Rifle and Precision Rifle matches at the 900m range on Homestead. The targets and format we shoot is very similar to what the BCRA puts on, and we have a contingent that heads out to the BCRA shoots as well. Yearly dues are $160 - you can contact 'Savage' on the board here -He'll set you up. You'd be more than welcome to come out to a match, hang out and see 'what's what'.

On rifles -Nothing wrong with a .22 -I think everyone should have at least one, but don't fret about just diving in. .308 is pretty much the standard, but I would highly recommend a fast twist .223 and handloaded heavy bullets to start out. You will be far from disadvantaged with the .223, and your shooting will be more economical.

thanks for that. ill contact him.

yeh i definitely want/need a .22, to sort out the gophers on our land digging up the horses field. the remaining ones are so clever now they wont allow us to get in air rifle range anymore!

then im fiarly confident id be looking at something like the remington 700 police in .308. i would love an Accuracy international as some of my colleagues used them in the police in the UK. and from what ive seen are a superb piece of kit. made my 9mm MP5 look like a toy! but it would take me a while to afford one of them. maybe ill get one when/if im good enough to actually use it to its full potential.

Anyone know when that Alberta Provincial Rifle Association will hold a beginner day? I assume they'll startup again in the spring, but I there's nothing listed on their website.

The John Howard Memorial match is the first match and it is usually the end of April, but call Peter Redstone or Glen Taylor for the extact date of any beginner's day practise sessions, their numbers are at the end of the movie Maynard posted... Glen(780)986-1667 and Peter(403)239-7629

JJack, we're right in the middle of scheduling for 2008 and so far have about 4 "New Shooter Day's" planned to be spaced out through the season. Nothing official yet. We should have a firm program by Jan 21, 2008 at the latest and I'll post it here and try to get our web administrator to pull the rag out of her bum and get the site updated. Might have more luck growing a second member than getting the website squared away.

Cheers, Glen
