I'm moving to Calgary in about a month. Any pointers on clubs to join or visit? I'll be living right in the city.

casual

Casual. Mixed gun types. I will be arriving in Calgary with no guns. Not having hunted in 8 or 9 years. I did only a bit of upland hunting, and mainly have been into plinking with 22s, blasting shotguns, and a few pistols. I've had and shot many different guns over the last few years. Overall, I've been shooting for maybe 18 years, and a range member for 4 or so. If I stay in Alberta, I might get a 30 cal hunter and try big game even. So, somewhere centre fire and handgun friendly would be best. Thanks. :D

Your best bet then is the Calgary and District Target Shooters Association.

Do you want to shoot indoor or outdoor?

Given the weather in Calgary, this is a serious question.

Take your time an d check us all out:

Calgary rifle and Pistol (handgun only) - indoor
Calgary and District Target Shooters Association. - outdoor
Okotoks Rod and Gun - (handgun only) - indoor
Steve Johnson (APRA) - outdoor
and us;
The Shooting Edge (rifle and handgun) - indoor

Not quite accurate. Okotoks Rifle & Pistol Club - Handgun, Centre Fire Rifles and shotguns are allowed. Steve Johnson Range is Handgun and Rim Fire rifles only (and muzzle loading black powder guns)

All I can suggest is compare memberships prices,I have found that when the price goes up so does the noses of those working there, especially towards the 'rookie'.Best thing is to talk to LOTS of people and go from there.

And remember Dragoon knows his s&*t

Whoa "glockoperator", I think you're reading more into Dragoon's reply than he said. I don't see any 'opinion' in his comments. He's simply giving facts as to what are the ranges and what can you do at them.

If anything, on the 'rookie' front, TSE handles more neophyte shooters than probably all the other ranges combined (where else can someone walk in and see if they like shooting, without having a friend indoctrinate them?)

If the TSE staff have their noses in the air, have a private conversation with JR or James.

p.s. Yes TSE is the most expensive range in the Calgary area.... and I'm more than happy to pay that price. (and no, they don't sponsor me, but perhaps they should :)

That is just my 2 cents worth---well maybe only 1 cent
I wasn't referring to any range in particular, kinda interesting TSE came into the conversation though, thanks for the heads up.I am up for renewall at the range I am at now and I too like to hear opinions from all range members.
And remember I am not a writer so things dont always make it from my head to the keyboard properly.
Thanks fellas

Check out Calgary & District Target Shooters. They offer a handgun and rifle range as well as clay target shooting. They are open 7 days a week and you can go whenever you want. You can also participate in any of the matches that they hold every month. New Menber fee is $ 195.00. www.cdtsa.org

In the winter we hold Qualifiers at The Shooting Edge. usually in Janaury and March.

for November, February and April we hold Qualifiers in Edmonton at the Phoenix Range.

Well,

For all the current members at TSE....

As of Jan 1st, we have new rates for membership:

1st year is still $450 but renewals (within one month of expiry) are now only $350 (tax in)

We have not had a major insurance increases so we thought we would reward our current membership.

As to our prices, yes we are the most expensive. However we also offer the most benefits and accessibility (for an indoor club). I make no apologese for our prices. However if you do get ANY "attitude", please do ask to see me.

Regards,

JR

TSE (Terrable shooting environment)

Yes, we are "Terrible Shooting Environment" for

Wannabees and Know-it-alls

All others are more then welcome to come by and use our facilities in a safe and enjoyable manner. :)

I understand that we cannot always make everyone happy, but to Mr. "One Post" BNEU, what you have not offered is constructive and/or helpful criticism. If we/I have done something improper, I do like to hear about it, otherwise I can never correct a problem. However to simply try to slam us is neither correct nor appropriate. This is regardless of the audience.
