Caliber advice.

Hey folks! Former Fudd and now handgun addict here.
Thinking of getting a bargain AR in case it goes to Prohib. (yes I've signed all the petitions and #####ed to any elected official that would listen).
Looking at the S&W M&P 15, but what would you recommend for an “End of Days” caliber, .223, 5.56??

Any input welcome, keeping in mind that my real passion is handguns and this will likely be a safe queen so I’m not interested in playing AR Lego with this upper on that lower with this accessory rail etc etc….

TIA!

From what I've seen the S&W M&P is a good basic rig.

Find some ammo that shoots well in it, Sight it in, lay in a supply of ammo and you're good to go. Keep it clean and well lubed and it should never let you down.

S&W M&P 15 Sport 2 is an excellent beginner AR. I was impressed with the trigger break, fit & finish. I have a Ruger AR556, but prefer the S&W. There are others out there. My comments are from personal experience.

My understanding is that the difference between 223 and 556 is the length of the throat in the chamber. The 223 has a shorter throat. Because of this, my understanding is that the official filling is a 556 can handle 223 and 556 while. 223 chambered rifle shouldn't shoot 556 ammo.

In the real world, plenty of people shoot 556 ammo in 223 chambered rifles, and I haven't heard of anything going kaboom.
