I am thinking of hunting bear, I have a few rifles to use, 308, 30-06 or a 45-70. I am thinking of a 165 partition in the 30cals. As for the 45-70 would a 300gr Hp or a 400 sp? The 45-70 is a ruger #1 so they will not be light loads.

All the bears I've ever taken were with my 30.06 and 180 Grand Slams, this year I'm switching to 165 nozlers. Like GTH said your more than well equiped, but bears aren't as hard to kill as some think

I think your on a good track there chuckwagon. As steeleco says bears aren't usually overly hard to kill. Having said that I would recommend that you stay away from hollow points in your 45-70. They can do a pile of damage and too often not lethally. They don't penetrate worth ####. Much better off with a soft point or even cast bullet 8)

Hard to go wrong with a partition.

Any of those cartridges will do a bear in nicely. The 30-06 is great, the 45-70 with handloads is a proven bear-slayer. If you don't reload, i'd stick with the 30's you have, either one will do.

4ga @ 3ft

Yes, that should throw you far clear of the bear.

That's illegal, if you have a shotgun without a plug while hunting you'll get fined (does it apply for defence?).

No, doesn't apply to defense. (not in bc anyway, no where else i've heard either. Check your local regs :) )

Steelco is right.

My boy shot a bear with a 300 sav (165 gr RN) this spring, did not take a step.

So... I was just out with my unplugged shotgun walking around looking to defend myself... yup that will work

Works here. Sorry about your luck living in ontario :)

Works in Saskatchewan too. Must be the higher concentration of common sense out west :p

This I do not reccomend but I have shot several Black Bear with a 243 hand loaded with 95 grn.Nosler Partitions.None of them went over ten feet. Most of them dropped in their tracks.
