caliber and bullet for bear?

That's illegal, if you have a shotgun without a plug while hunting you'll get fined (does it apply for defence?).

OMG Its going STRAIGHT for us!
it is now legal
Happy hunting, i mean defending

For black bears I have killed a few with my .30-30 with 170 gr remington corelokts. They are not hard to kill IF they are hit right.

cheers Darryl
Good point, all that bulk , small vitals , its a good idea to take a few seconds to look it all over , and carefully pick a spot at the right angle.
Frank
As for caliber , it would depend on range, many will do just fine.

I think I may try the Partition in my 308. But I have thought about the 170 rem Core loc. I hand load and I made a few test ones last year. Seemed to shoot wall. In the 308 you can get those suckers going 500fps faster than a 30-30. I,ll load some up and see once again how they shoot.

The 170 corelokts are designed to work at .30-30 velocities. (2200fps) I don't know if boosting them to 2700fps is a good idea. A heavy bone hit (shoulder) could result in bullet failure. I have no evidence to support this theory just my spider sense tingling.

cheers Darryl

I read in an artical in HANDLOADER magazine, that a Remington core loc in a round nose will act like a partition. There are a few reasions why. If I could remember the artical I could let you know the issue. How ever, they clam the 180 rn is the ticket. The best I could come up with is the 170. I may just put some bullets in a bad and see what I pull out. It may be the partition, it is time tested.

Well they may be right for all i know, but it seems really unlikely that performance would be the same. Partitions are tried and true - personally if you want partition performance i'd just buy partitions. Beacuse you KNOW partitions are just as good as partitions.

I believe that the best calibre for hunting bears is the .35 Whelen. Remington 250 Grain Cor-Lokt.

.35 Whelen

.35 Whelen!!!

Lay down, stay down!!!

I wondered what the bullet would do. (Rem 170 core loc in 30-06) Never tryed it. I started using the Hornady 165SST. It is great on dear. Makes a mess but accuret. I think it may open up too much on bear. Also thought on the Inter bond. I have some, but never heard anything too much about them. One friend had good luck but that is all I know. With the feed back I am getting the Partition may do. I still have to see the Bear.

Feild reports of the interbond are quite encouraging. 'boo has loaded them for the 30-06, maybe pm him for some more info if you've a mind to use 'em.

I have shot 2 bears both wit my Winchester model 70 .308 with 180 gr. power points and silver tips.

A buddy of mine I talk to over the net that I have not seen in about 2-3 years said he took a bear last fall with his Winchester model 94 .30-30 with I think he said 165gr. silvertips or power points, cann't remember the grain of the bullet.
I said he was nuts to use a .30-30.

Good Luck Everyone
William

Then again, I heard of a few Inuits with balls of steel that tought a single shot .22 lr was more than enough for polar bear...never could locate them though
