Caliber refers only to the bullet diameter while the cartridge designates the case as well.For instance 7mm is a caliber while 7mmremmag is a cartridge.

Not quite, it could refer to aproximate bore diameter

So why is the guy behind the counter a smartass.He gave the guy exactly what he asked for.When I walk up to the counter and ask for bullets,I expect to be sold bullets and would find it annoying if the counter person handed me loaded ammunition.

He was a smartass becuase he knew what the guy wanted but decided to take the customer @ his word. Don't get me wrong I think he was well with his rights and I enjoyed the exchange as much as the counter dude.

When in camp and I hear 30-06 is the best calibre I just let it go Nobody

I have ever hunted with would confuse 308 and a 30-06..

Personally i say cartridge thou. but when you shoot 348 there is only one

and I shoot it.

On the other hand,he may have simply been playing it safe.He might have thought that the guy wanted loaded ammo,but he would have looked foolish if this assumption was wrong,since the guy did ask for bullets.Better the guy in front of the counter looking foolish than him.
