Hi there, a friend of mine is going deer hunting to Saskatchewan late this fall and he was told that he may have to take long(300yds) shots. He has a choice between a 7mm rem mag and 300 win mag. Which caliber would be more suitable for such purpose?
Thx
Rob

300 yards isn't that far. Either is capable of doing the job easily much further with a well placed bullet. Whichever one your friend shoots best is the one he should take. If I were going to take a trip, I'd take both, the further you are from home, the more likely you are to have a failure and wish you had a backup.

Agreed, 300 yards is not a big deal with any medium size rifle with a scope. There are many good choices of rifles that fit the agenda.

Ballistically the 7 mag and the .300 mag overlap when bullet weights suitable for deer are considered. Both rounds are versatile and can be used without reservation for any North American game. Both rounds have proven to be superior long range hitters for the talented marksman. IMHO, due to the high impact velocities over normal hunting ranges, both rounds should be loaded with premium bullets when used for big game.

He doesn't need a magnum, of any kind, for deer, but he should use the rifle he can shoot best. If he can't hit a 9" pie plate, every time, at 300, he shouldn't attempt the shot. If he can't hit the pie plate, every time, at 100, he shouldn't use either cartridge.
