Caliber restrictions being lifted in NB

There were caliber restrictions in NB?

An aspect of hunting regulations in Atlantic Canada generally, unfortunately. (It still exists here in NL.)

Do you have a link to an article or anything? Cant believe I didn't know about this (I've never lived in NB)

The good news is being shared by the New Brunswick Wildlife Federation. I suspect a government news release and regulatory changes will follow in due course.

Good for the, now NL has more ammo to try this in NL. I've written multiple letters to Ministers, MHAs, Wildlife Officials about eliminating calibre restrictions on coyote tags, all I got was a lame response which amounted to NO.

That is quite typical of the behaviour here. In an official capacity I wrote to the then Minister of Environment and Conservation regarding the .17HMR cartridge in June 2010. Nothing changed until July 2020.

Mind you, most of our existing wildlife regulation is largely unchanged since the 1970s, some of it prior to that. Things advance at a glacial pace here, if at all.

What was it that took 10 years to get changed?

What about some explanations ?

What caliber was restricted for what purpose etc...........

This thread sucks.

This thread sucks.

Are you from NB ? If not, who the F are you to say this thread sucks ? I've been waiting for years for this news. Until now, you could only shoot on crown land with a caliber larger than .23 during the open big game seasons.

That was worded a little confusingly, outside of big game season you could only use calibers less than .23 caliber.

Like Parts-Man said, for big game you could use whatever centerfire cartridge you wanted, but outside of big game season all varmint/small game hunting was restricted to .23 cal and under and shotgun less than (i believe it was BBB, i don't use shotgun much so i never really payed that close attention to that part, but no slugs)

I have a property in NB, yes.

And yes, I do maintain my point.

This thread has no explanations or information on anything and it blows.

See post #5. A government news release (and regulatory changes) with more information will probably come along in due course.

You own property in NB, and have no clue about the restrictions on caliber when it comes to hunting in NB?

Since you haven't taken the time to familiarize yourself with the current wording of the NB Fish and Wildlife Act and its regulations, and are obviously someone who requires instant gratification, I will try to assist in spite of the lack of a polite request.

Here is an example of the kind of restrictions being discussed:

9(2)Subject to subsection (4), no holder of any class of hunting licence issued under the Act shall take, carry or have in his possession in a resort of wildlife during the open season for hunting the species authorized to be hunted under such licence a centre-fire or rim-fire rifle of .23 calibre or larger unless
(a) he is the holder of a class I or class III licence and is, at the time and place where he is found in possession of such a rifle, entitled to hunt antlered deer, or
(b) he is the holder of a resident bear licence or non-resident bear licence and is, at the time and place where he is found in possession of such a rifle, entitled to hunt bear.

Hunting Regulation, NB Reg 84-133, under the Fish and Wildlife Act, SNB 1980, c F-14.1
