Caliber / rifle for kids

My daughter turns 10 in August and wants to get out hunting with me. What caliber or rifle combo would one suggest for a kid. She's a tough kid but i don't have anything smaller than a light 308 that has some snap behind it for her to try (don't want her flinching cause i started her on too big a gun). She's tried the 357 lever and didn't flinch but i have no experience with the smaller rifle calibers. Was considering 243 but thought I'd throw the question out before dropping cash. Thanks

My boy started off quite young and he was recoil sensitive. I went with a Model 7 youth in .243 Win and made light loads for him using 85gr Nosler Partitions. I never chronographed the load but I doubt it would have been more than 2700fps - probably quite a bit less. I believe the load was 33gr of IMR 4064. There was virtually zero recoil and the load is surprisingly effective. I also tried a full sized 7mm-08 using 120gr Nosler Ballistic Tips and that was too much for him until he was about 13 or so. All of the sudden he is fine with it, fine with moderate .270 loads and even fine with moderate 7mm RM loads out of a heavier rifle. I make sure he shoots prone, sitting and with a bog-pod as well. He found it quite challenging the first time he moved away from the comfort of the bench.

I would suggest a T3X Compact and load 85-100gr bullets to around 2700 fps. You can use regular cup and core like Hornady SP for practice and the little Partitions for hunting. That will save some $ in the long run. The Weatherby Youth models are nice too, but kind of heavy. Make sure the rifle futs her and a good trigger is, IMO, important.

Don't worry about the lower velocity - a properly placed broadside shot on deer at 150 yards or less will end up with a happy little huntress.

From my experience, the .308W is an ideal platform for young shooters, using reduced loads. A few years ago, family friends advised me their 13 year old son was having issues with the recoil of their .280R and was flinching badly. I had a nice .308 Remington M722 that I wasn't using so I loaded up some 125gr. Hornady SSTs with 38gr. of H4895 (2600fps), and took him to the range. I fired the first shot to show him how mild the recoil was, then put the rifle in his hands. Before the box of 20 was empty, he had a best group of 1.5" and had a big smile on his face.
Several days later he came by the house, grinning broadly, with news that he had just shot his first deer. It was a beautiful 2-point, shot at a distance of nearly 200 yards, right through the heart. Bang-flop, didn't move an inch. Now he is 18, and shooting full loads in the same rifle, which he bought from me.
Felt recoil with that reduced load is similar to a .243, so you may want to give it a try.

Fit is more important than caliber. If you reload a 45-70 would be ok.
But I lean towards short actions, 260, 7mm08, are good but I like 308.

TB what does that little MDT rifle weigh?

I am into single shot T/C Contender carbines my son now 35 years old started with a 21" barreled in 30-30 my younger son started with a 21" barreled 7-30 Waters.

Younger son is now shooting a LH Savage Axis youth in 243

That .357 will work fine at moderately close range. Or .44 mag for a bit more punch. I like the 30-30 too. Especially out of a Marlin with the semi-pistol grip and the butt stock shortened a bit, and fluffy recoil pad installed. Not too much muzzle blast, even with a carbine length barrel, which is important. The 6.5x55 also has mild report and recoil.

Do you handload?

Check out a recoil calculator to figure out recoil. Find loads so you can enter the powder charge also. The .243 has pretty mild recoil, but a bit of bark. Probably want something with a shortish barrel to keep the front end weight manageable for young arms. A Remington model 7, would fit the bill. I'd try to keep the recoil around 10 ft./lbs., but having a fairly straight stock that fits, and nice recoil pad will go a long way to making the gun friendly for young shooters.

I was wondering, I have a 30-06 I’m trying to sell that no one wants lol and I have a 13 years old daughter that I would like to get into hunting/shooting... I’m considering starting to reload, can one get a 30-06 to behave like a lighter recoiled caliber(7mm08, 6.5x55.etc) and still get good performances?
Maybe I should start my own thread....

Paint or hydro dip it pink camo. If she likes that sort of thing, even make it off father daughter project. A inch or so stock if it needs it. Find a nice load that the girl likes. And you can always load it up more down the road as she gets used to it. I'd go with a fix power lightweight scope to start with.

I went to work to modify a "full size" stock for younger grandson - discovered it is more than shortening the butt stock length of pull - also will want to slim the fore end so they can grab it securely, and deal with the pistol grip - have to reduce length of reach to trigger for little fingers, and also to reduce circumference of that pistol grip for little hands to hang on to it properly. Often overlooked by us "big people"...

time does fly by! Great pic Hoyt

Thanks, he whacked hundreds of grouse with that pellet pistol... lots of good times. I'm a little nostalgic right now as my dad passed away two days ago... lots of great memories hunting and fishing across the North.

I bought my grand daughter a Weatherby Vanguard GirlsHunt2 youth model in 243 Win this summer. She just turned 10 this month, and is very slightly built for her age, but she manages the recoil quite well shooting off the bench.

You already have a 308. With a light bullet loaded not too hot, and a good recoil pad, it could feel like a 243 particularly if the rifle isn’t too light.
Otherwise, 30-30 150gr

As someone who hunts with his kids in BC, I can highly recommend the CZ 527 in 7.62x39. Fit my 11 year old son perfectly. It's light, small, accuarte, easy to aim and hardly any kick. The ammo is cheap too. I never had a problem with it corroding from surplus ammo either. He's 15 now and still loves it although this year he was just shooting grouse with a 20 ga. We didn't see any bucks. He's taken coyotes and a spike buck with it though.
