Is there any particular reason you fellas who own '03s don't want to sell them to someone who just wants an '03........then buy or build something less expensive and collectible?

Because that person doesn't want to pay anything for it.....

The .30/06 is my favorite cartridge, so that would be my choice, and few shooting problems cannot be solved with one. I had an sporterized '03 Sringfield once upon a time, with a Herters stock. It wasn't the most accurate '06 I've ever owned, but it wasn't bad either. A Krieger barrel would fix all ills.

You have to decide what the gun will be used for. Deer,moose,coyote,paper. I think you would be well served to go big (will 375 ruger fit ?) or go small 243 etc. This is JMHO anything but 30-06. Go for fun.

You don't specify intended use. Seeing as you already have the 06 covered. My choices for big game would be 35 Welen AI or 338-06. Reamers ammo/brass should be easily obtainable. I love my Whelen but have to admit there is a better bullet selection in 338, and it also has a tad better down range performance, not that a moose or elk would know the diff.

Thanks for the sugestions, going with the 338-06 or the 35 whealen, always wanted a 35 whelan but not that crazy over rem pump rifles. Now on to the next step, convincing the wife i need a new barrel.

I was just going to suggest .338-06. Folks I know swear by it. Just might get one built myself.
