Caliber VS Rifle

Had a Rem Model 700 BDL in .243 Win. I shoot both the 6mm remington and the (old) .243. The 6mm smoked the .243 in every way,(velocity, accuracy, case life, etc.) so I rebarreled the .243 to .308 win :) . At least now it is fun to shoot. The .243 was just plain booooring !!

They have long been traded off for combos I love! Most times it was the other way around though, I liked the cartridge but grew bored of the gun.

The way you've asked:

Win94 in 30-30, fun but needed a spotting scope more.
Parker Hale 81 Classic, 270, got rebarreled.

The other way around has a more lengthy list which has cost me a pile over the years!

I had a Sako 75 Stainless Synthetic in 7mm rem mag, the gun weighed about 10 lbs with scope. The rifle was really accurate, fit me likea glove, but I dodn't need a 10 lb 7 mag. It would have been just about perfect in 375 H&H.

I have a Sako AIII in 30-06 , beautiful rifle that weighs a bit over 9 lbs scoped....that's heavy for an '06, but I'll try it....every time I shoulder it I wish it were a Whelen....

I had a Gorgeous Ruger No1 V Heavy Barrel....stunning wood, def. as nice as it gets for a No 1. It shot very well..usually one ragged hole with 140 Noslers.
But ALAS it was chambered in 280 Remington:(

Actually it's a Great Cartridge too just didn't like the Two paired together.....

Great Rifle but wrong Cartridge for what I "needed" at the time so I foolishly sold it:redface:

The most questionable purchase I ever made was a M-700 BDL in .350 magnum. It was 1973, and I was 18. At the time I was pleased with this turkey. I topped it off with a 23/4X Redfield TV screen scope - my second mistake. Apparently it was very difficult to get a good seal on those things. I was brand new at handloading and my loads were not up to contemporary accuracy standards. So what I had was a very long rifle of moderate power, in a flimsy stock, topped off with a warm weather scope, which couldn't out shoot my .303.

Today I would properly bed the barrelled action it in a suitable stock, knock off 4" of barrel, mount a low power variable scope, and load some decent ammo.

I love all my rifles in all calibers....except maybe wish my Mosin-Nagant was a303 instead of 7.62x54R. I'd have ammo galore instead of trying to find this rarer ammo and paying high prices that go with it.

I don't get it, why is this caliber(7.62x54R) so rare, yet there are tons of these rifles out there?

Being a lefty there are many rifles I'd like to own but either the manufacturers don't make them in LH, or the come in standard cals.

I'd really like a new Ruger Hawkeye All Weather, but who knows when they'll offer a lefthand version. Remington too does not like lefties, or the 338, so that's three strikes against them.

Savage does but they don't offer any detach mags or even hinged floorplate. Browning is more lefty friendly but their prices are way up there now, ridiculous.
