caliber

.30 cal
.300WM would be a good cartridge choice in that caliber

.338 cal
.338WM would be another good option...especially with the wide variety of bullets available today in that calibre

LOL! The first thing I thought of when I saw the title of this thread was it was going to be someone saying "Why the heck do people say "caliber" when they are talking about a "cartridge"???"

But no it is someone saying "caliber" when they are really wanting to know about a "cartridge".

Here is how the rest of the thread will go:

Some are going to say "I shot three deer with a .243 and they all died so I recommend the .243."

Others are going to say " Some day you might want to hunt moose or polar bear so you better get a .375 H&H right now, there is no such thing as too much gun."

Then some others will recommend a number of different good and popular cartridges and maybe even some popular rifles that are chambered in them.

In the end you will go into a gun store and see a rifle on the rack and fall in love with it, take it home and hunt happily ever after.

I believe that .30 caliber will do the trick. I'd go with the 30-06 cartridge because it is common and thus cheap and available. There are various bullet weights and projectile designs available to a hand loader making this round even more flexible.

I suspect you are talking about the cost of ammo? Truthfully, if you are considering hunting grizz with it, I'd look seriously at the .300WM.

ya, cost of ammo... per shot, bought in bulk.

and what if we take grizz off the table, just deer n black. whats the cheapest i can get away with in that case?

In my opinion, a deer rifle and a grizzly bear rifle are two different rifles.
Anything from .243 and up is good for deer. I wouldn't intentionaly go looking for a grizz with less than a .300wm.

How much ammunition are you going to shoot at deer or black bears?
One or two per animal X how many animals per year?
Cost per round is pretty insignificant given the amount of ammunition that you are going to shoot at game.
As long as the Chinese 7.62 ammunition is available, a .308 is pretty useful. Chinese for plinking and practice, good hunting rounds for the critters.

If you are going to complain about the cost of ammunition then don't choose a magnum cartridge.

Buying something in 308 WIN and using the Chinese NATO ammunition for practice is a good idea. You will still need to buy the ammunition you intend to hunt with sight in the scope come time to use the rifle for its purpose.

If your asking this question, and your handle is "Popcanhunter," there is a 99.9% chance you won't ever hunt grizzlies... You would be best to look at a gun more suited to deer/blackbear... Any of the cartridges that work on one work on the other... Pick one from the following (partial) list... This will be a sliding scale (loosly) from (light with more speed) to (heavier with more energy/momentum);

.25/06, .250/3000, .257, .260, 6.5X55, 7X57, 7mm-08, .280, .308, .30/06

And then you have the magnums or short magnums etc...

Take your pick... Put the shot in the right place and they will all get the job done.

If not a reloader go with 308 as it's cheaper than 30-06 for similar performance. Since I reload, my choice is the 6.5x55mm Swede. This round is more than adequate to do the trick since you can pick the mass and type of projectile from quite a few manufacturers.

.303, 7.62x54r, .30-06, .308

Use 150gr for deer, black bear
Use 180gr for grizzlies

A .308 will take down any game animal in North America. Anybody who tells you you "need" a 7mm mag, etc is full of it, unless you intend to hunt long range. But most of the animals shot by your average guy are shot within 100m
