Phoned in to get an antique letter for an antique.

Anyways, just got a call from a guy named Serge from the CFC. He had a few questions about importing guns and wanted to know what State I bought it in, and what Border crossing I came through.

Anybody else had a call from his guy? He didn't seem to know anything about antiques, and was only interested in importing. He kept calling my gun a restricted firearm and I had to keep correcting him that it was not, and was an antique chunk of metal.

If it's an antique, I fail to see the pertinence of WHERE it came from (and would therefore have my own set of questions for this guy, mainly regarding the motives of his questions)... it could've landed on Earth from the moon, if it's pre-1898 and not chambered in one of the no go calibers, no further explanations are necessary. And if he called it a "restricted firearm", I'd just plain tell him that he must be confusing me with someone else's file and I'd wish him a good day, then hang up. Call back when you get your facts straight, bud!

I always wondered how one goes about getting a job at the CFC... because obviously legal and/or technical knowledge of firearms is not a prerequisite. It doesn't seem to be a part of on-job training either.

Pretty sure the guy I talked to a number of years ago was Serge. Nice guy, he asked some questions, we had a pleasant conversation. Remember, its a job for this guy, he may not be a "gun" guy or his area of knowledge may be in another area of firearms.

As for the question about what state it came from, maybe they are trying to track Obama's illegal gun smuggling operation.:p

Seriously, they just may be building up stats, which in and of itself maybe be nothing or troubling, depending on the ultimate purpose of that information.

You should have told him you got it in Texas from a thin black guy that smiled a lot.
And he had about another 1000 to give away.

He was from the CFC for sure. He left a bunch of messages and his extension #1034.
Said he was building stats, but I bet it has something to do with making importing harder for us.
Strange all around.

Me too. Those are really weird questions. How do you even know he was from the CFC? I would have asked for his extention # at the CFC's 1-800#.

The man really works there. I spoke to him today (ext 1034). He is not there only for antique status. I am having one of my guns changing classification from 12-6 to restricted and even though I have a signed paper from a verifier, he asked me to send pictures with a digital caliper showing the length of the barrel!:)

OK

OK

That's just CYA for the file, I guess he would already know how easy it would be to diddle that caliper reading.

One other thing - you do have other 12-6 firearms, right? because if this is your only 12-6 and you change the classification to restricted, then you will no longer be grandfathered and likely lose your 12-6 license. I'm sure you know this already, but I figure it can't hurt to mention it anyway.

Yes I do have other 12-6s but thank you for bringing it up!:)
