Call me bubba if you will...

So a while ago I posted a thread asking for scoping recommendations for my SKS. Got a lot of responses and a few that said not to bother. If you're of the camp that hates scoped SKSs, turn back now!

That being said, it started off as a run of the mill "supergrade" SKS from wholesale sports. I did the following mods:

Sand and refinish stock with Truoil
Bedded stock with JBWeld and epoxy putty
Polish sear
Wolf spring kit on trigger
My own special mod to remove trigger creep and reduce take-up to about 1/16"
Trigger over-travel stop
Had PU Scope installed.

Trigger now pulls at a pretty crisp 3lbs 10oz and I got about 5" groups (maybe a little smaller) at 100 yards with factory brass ammo. Looking to do a few handloads to see how it actually goes with some more consistent ammo

Anyways, this was really just a sh!ts and giggles project to see if I could do any better with an SKS. I did take it down from barely on paper with iron sights to well within in the paper and always on the gong, so overall I am pleased with that. I may shim the scope mount a bit so the reticle can sit more centered though.

Hope you enjoyed.

not really bubba's sks, I like it. Glad you went with an athentic style scope. As for the finnish they use all sorts or wierd #### during refinishing like purple shellac i got on a mosin to some ( few ) that look like they used oil even tho they were soviet. Im working on one right now with "tung oil finnish " then shellac.

I am not a huge fan of altering them, but you did this with style. Very nicely done. By the way I love your shooting bags. Last forever I bet.

If you want to try something really different in terms of a scope mount and tighten up that group, look up Addley Precision scope mounts. Keep on tinkering my friend. I make it a point to always have a project gun on the go.

There is no way I would call you Bubba for what you did.

Bubba involves butchering a rifle or doing something horribly disgusting to it. What you have done is neither.

In fact, it is right along the lines of the project I recently completed involving my '34 91/30, except I went with the most modern Brass Stacker mount available and a Bushnell LER scope.

Thanks, they really are fantastic shooting bags. I used some old jeans legs and filled it plastic "filler beads" from michaels. Definitely a cheap solution but works just as good as any other bag.

Very nicely done, and not bubba'ed at all. I have some SKSs that are still "stock" whereas others were fitted in a more modern or ergonomic stock, etc... I have not tried mounting a scope yet but might have to now... I really like your set-up. Cheers!

Well, people keep saying "not bubba" but as soon as you sand a stock or drill a receiver you're definitely bubba as the value is instantly gone. The value of a refurbished SKS is just so insanely low right now that people don't care.

Looks good though. With a scope you should be able to do better than 5" with commercial, perhaps the bedding is the issue or the rifle needs a new crown.

I've always liked a pu scope on a sks, it fits it nicely and isn't overkill in the magnification dept for what the sks is capable of shooting out to. Looks nice even if some people call you Bubba, lol.

I was thinking the same thing, my SKS can almost shoot 5" groups on irons at 100 right out crate. from a bag obviously...I actually found some surplus to be more accurate than most of the factory stuff I tried...Hornady was the worst by far...not sure why.

Interesting. I haven't put any of the surplus through it lately, i'll give that a go next time i'm at the range though. My problem is that i'm not very good with irons, so the scope definitely helps me a lot. And yes, virtually any permanent modification to a milsurp qualifies me as a bubba, but in this case it's an SKS so who really cares? That being said, I have an unfired unrefurb example cleaned up and stored away :)

Crown is good on it and bedding seems to be solid, it's at a minimum not worse than original.

Oh, I did find tonight my scope mount had loosened slightly, so i'll be putting some loctite on that as well, maybe it'll make a difference..

Will post updates as it progresses.

Very nice! My eyes are getting worse and worse so I want to do a scoped SKS too but I'm not a fan of the kwikrail style setups, I want that authentic Balkan sniper look with a side mount.
