I bought it two weeks ago and it has sit in the safe..I took it out to clean it...followed the instructions. Slid off the clamp (barrel guide ring?), unscrewed the bottom part, was surpsied to see that spring pop out! :D
Put the fore-end halfway and tried to get the barrel out...nothing.
Huh...this is a really dumb question cause i hear these guns are cakewalk to get apart...what am I doing wrong?
I just stuffed that spring back in and screwed the cap back (i hope it's okay) and screwed the clamp back on, put it back in the safe, admitted defeat and came here to post.

So help a dummy out! :p :D

The mag spring retainer is missing, tht's why the mag spring popped out.
As for the barrel not coming off....with the mag cap off and the action about half way open the barrel SHOULD just pull straight off but if it doesn't there could either be a bit of surface rust OR (more likely) the fit is a bit tight between barrel and receiver. What I do in that case is gently and very slightly wiggle the barrel left and right while holding the barrel at the band and pull it off. I had one that was a really really tight fit and took a lot of wiggling to get it free.

Cheers

Okay i got the barrel out...that magazine cap was on SOOO TIGHT I almost broke my arm getting that damn thing off. Do I nessasarily need this missing piece?

You don't need it. It's not a part you can replace, it's a dimple in the mag tube that makes a bump on the inside. People grind it off to allow the use of magaine extensions like this:

It will not hurt or harm anything other then the mag spring will pop out if your not careful when taking the mag cap off.

There is a little spring collar that is inserted into the mag. tube to retain the magazine spring when the barrel is removed. If its missing, it makes takedown awkward, the spring popping out. Shouldn't be hard to locate one.
Of course, if there is an extension on the magazine tube, rather than the plain cap on a standard length magazine, that's how its got to be.

To add to the confusion, the style of mag cap retention will vary depending on whether you have the old stlye or new style end cap, I will guess that you have the old style if the mag spring popped out. If it was the newer Express style the cap would not have stayed tight because the spring retainer is integral to keeping the cap tight.
A lot of people think they have to crank the end cap down really hard, but finger tight is all that is needed, th ebarrel ball detent will keep it from unscrewing. A trick to get it off is to put the butt onto the ground and push downward on the barrel while unscrewing the cap.

If you don't want to replace the retained (Old style) then watch your eyes when you take the endcap off.
Cheers

I think he has the short barrel 7 shot 870 (he mentioned removing a clamp). If it is, these do not have the plastic piece and when you unscrew the mag extension the spring pops out. This is normal.

Thanks! I got the 7 round version and I guess this is normal! Confusing because the book said it was capped but showed another model.
