So my son and myself walked out of a cut yesterday onto a logging road to walk back to the truck . This guy was about 200 yards out , walking away , between us and the truck .

I told my son to watch quietly as i attempted to call the bear back and maybe up the hill where we were . I started doing my best moose calf bleat , and he turned . The wind was blowing from him to us so no way he could pick up scent .

He not only made it up the first hill but as we retreated he kept coming up the small second hill and around the corner . I kept bleating .

He stopped for a moment but the though of a tasty calf over rode his better judgement .

At 15 yards i stopped calf bleating , but he kept coming .

I heard the safety click on the 870 as my son figured , this is far enough , and the bear bolted . About 300 pounds and very healthy looking .

We actually saw 3 bears . The first was a little Boo Boo bear and he was gone like greased lightning . I attempted to call the second , moose calf bleating and it sort of worked but instead of coming straight in , that bear circled downwind and when he caught our scent , he was gone . Thick bush so i didn't get any pics . That one was a bit over 200 pounds . The one in the pic came right in , although he hesitated a few times . When he'd hesitate , i'd call and he'd keep coming . We first spotted him about 200 yards out but as he came over the crest of the first hill , we retreat back so in total the call brough him in about 300 yards until my son snapped the safety on the 870 at 15 yards . I'm happy with the pics but a little disappointed that i didn't read the manual for the camera . It's a Sony that my wife bought on Saturday and according to her , i had some background light on when i shouldn't have or didn't have it on when i should have . I think i must have pressed a button during or between shots . There is a bunch of buttons on the back .

Yeah pretty cool... but a little crazy don't you think? Is it bear season?
I think that calling a bear with a shotgun in your posession could be defined as hunting by an overzealous C.O.
I do think they are some awesome pics... would have been extreme on video!

Ya know BIGREDD , i never even thought of that . We always carry a shotgun but sure enough calling could/would be defined as hunting even though this guy would be DOA if we actually were really hunting .

death-junky , i'm behind enemy lines in the Peoples Democratic Pinecone Republic of Ontario . The powers in Mogadishu (Toronto) cancelled our spring bear hunt a few years ago . No rifle but we carry a slug gun as bear medicine if needed .

That's just awsome!

Anyone with experience please expand on what kind of calls are of interest to black bears.............

I'd like to have every available trick up my sleeve!!
