Calling all fellow 8 Mag and/or 350 Mag owners

Nice looking bear. And what rosey cheeks you have!

The Woodleigh zipped right through the bear? Are you still using them or are you back to Barnes now?

hit the bear frontal and the bullet was probably somewhere in the middle to back end of him. We skinned him and cut the quarters off, didn't gut it. He only made it about three feet so I think it performed well :D The Woodleighs are my bear load since shots are usually in the 50-100 yard range tops. TSX for elk/moose

this year the big eight will not go out, too many new guns to try! :( :)

I have had a .350 rm for just about three years, a 700 Classic that I restocked with a boyds jrs, haven't fired a round through it yet...:redface::confused: I have all the fixin's now, just gotta load some up and give 'er a go...Looking at using 225's.

Funny thing is I've been looking at the 8mm rm more and more over the past few months and I figure I may need to pick one up, if I can find one! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh guns, what a malady to have!!!!!!

I hunt moose in 15B up your way most falls. Nice country.

I like my 350RMs alot. At last count I have four on hand. All the good stuff said about the 35 Whelen is true of the 350RM too IMO. The latest one I acquired is an "uber light" Custom KS Model Seven.

I use mine mostly for bear with 250s at 2440 or so. Always works - no tracking required - so far. But I'll be trying 200 TSX bullets very soon - just for a change.

The stars of this video clip are a juvenile black bear and my classic M600 in 350RemMag - notice the vent rib - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6oHQ0NBQbk Most bears are not so lucky when meeting up with one of my 350 RMs.

The big 8 is great!

it has dispatched deer, elk, caribou, 9 moose, several bears, usually with 200 speer hotcor or norma 196 dual core,

it hits very hard and just works.

My 35 cals are a 358 win using 250 speer and normas,@ 2400
358 norma with 225 noslers@ 2900.

they work great too...!

I've got a 98 mauser with a shaw barrel in 350 rm. I've had mine for about 10 yrs and have used one load for hunting everything , federal 210 primer , 55 grs RL-15 and a hornady 250 gr spire point for an averaged ( chronographed) 2435 fps from a 21 inch barrel. I got lucky with the load , started at 53 grs RL-15 ,then 54 and finally 55. All loads shot about one moa so I used the load with the highest velocity. This load is straight out of hornady's manual and is'nt rated as max and is fine in my rifle but does show flattened primers in my brothers 350(an original model 700 he's owned for over 30 yrs) so as always start low and work your way up. Between these 2 rifles ,12 moose ,2 elk and too many white-tails and muleys to remember, all but 2 were 1 shot kills, and all were taken inside 200 yrds. All in all it is an extremely reliable cartridge and one of my favorite calibers

I have a similar set up on one of mine. 98 action (allows a longer col, out to 3.2"), lightened, Shilen barrel, 20" long (if memory serves), teflon coated. Trim sporter stock, nice to carry. I get just over 2600 fps with a load of 4064 behind the 250 gr Speer though. Maybe a faster barrel, I suppose. 3-9 scope on it, makes a nice hunting rig. I had a Rem 600 in this caliber too, but it went to Alaska a while back and hasn't made it's way home yet. - dan

I have one on the way in Remington 673. Nice thread. Plan on using it for deer in Central Ontario at distances not exceeding 100 to 150 yards. I reload and would be very interested to hear some suggestions for loads in this type of hunting.

Try 35cal.com , there is quite a lot of reloading data on this site. Some of it seems a bit hot but every gun is different and there is a lot of good info on this site

I have a BDL in 8mm and love it. Nothing like a 200gr at over 3000fps :)
For argument sake ...... A quick look at some loading data gives a few 200gr 300WM loads going close to or the same velocity.

How is the 8Mag better?

.... I've never owned either. Just wondering :D

.

You're so hot! :D

Had a few 8mags and a fair number of 350 rem's.The 8mag is at its best with a 220gr zipping along at close to 3000.My current custom 350 rem's favorite load is 59grs of RL15 ahead of a 250gr,breaks slightly over 2550fps over the chrony out of a 21" barrel.

i gotta 8mm or 325wsm, and agree that a 200 gr bullet at just over 3000fps is just plain bad-ars! after using it and directly comparing it to 3006, 308, 7mm rm that i have used, its a clear winner! i load my own so ammo avail isnt an issue. IMHO the 8mm is the most overlooked caliber rifle for deer and up... hope i get to try it on a moose this year!

Actually, 3200fps is possible with the 200gr in the big 8. I chrono'd a "light" load at 2950 and with some slower powders, 3100-3200 is reachable. No 300WM is able to match that :)

Double Tap ammo is loaded to 3200fps with the 200gr Nosler AB.

nice rifles Art

I pushed 250 Woodleigh's to 2890 fps with RL25 in my 24" brl 8mm RM. I load 200TSX to 3000, I'm sure it could go faster ;)

Oh, will try 35cal.dom. Thanks Anglia2.

Anglia2 - thanks for referencing my site. Remember most of my tables on 35cal.com are just the range notes of my results developing loads and not load data "per se". You're right that some are hot loads and some even way over published max - but many are not too. Read carefully, consult reputable load data manuals, and use caution.

Woodlotowner - just got a doe tag for 56. I hunt deer and bear between Tory Hill and Gooderham and South Koshlong. Maybe we may be in the same woods come fall. What do you hunt with your 673 - just deer - or do u go for bear and moose too?

Whelen B I didn't realize that was your site. Did'nt mean to imply that your data was off , just that anyone using it should start low and work up carefully. I've used alot of your loads with excellent results. Thanks for a really useful and well researched website. By the way anglia is an old nickname , I was born in England

Whelen B, Great Site ...nice fish too ;-)
What a timely topic. When I was a kid, the 600's and 660s were new and I dreamt of owning one. At that time to my young mind the 6.5 Rem Mag and 350 Rem Mag were the pair of rifles you need to be covered for all hunting on the continent. Today we look at them as the original short mags ahead of their time. I am still shopping for pristine collectible copies to help relive my youth.

Today I own a pair of 673's in both the calibers as well as a Model 7 CDL in 350. Just this past week I picked up a couple of pounds of TAC and some 200 gr TSX to test out. Supercub waxing on about the 35 Whelen convinced me to import one the the limited run (1 of 250) maple stocked 7600's in 35 Whelen. Hope to get a load developed before hunting season to test that out. Geez, if I pull out the Model 88 in 358, maybe I will hunt all fall with just 35's?
