Hi CGN,

I recently got a new rifle and scope (TC ICON in .308 and Bushnell Elite 6500 2.5-16x42). As this is my first rifle and scope, I'd really like someone to 'hold my hand' as it were, to zero everything in.

What I'm specifically asking, is someone to meet me at their range (I don't have a membership anywhere, so will pay the day rate if they are kind enough to have me as their guest), lend me their benchrest/sandbags, and teach me tip & tricks so I can learn and begin to do this confidently myself moving forward. I'm not a new shooter, but am humble enough to recognise I don't know everything.

I live in North Van, however I know all the ranges (I would like to zero at 100yds) are in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Squamish etc. so am happy to meet you where convenient, and make a day of it. I'll bring ammo, safety equipment and whatever tools I can, plus a few adult beverages of your choice to say thank you for your trouble.

Thanks!
Danger.

Don't listen to those guys. It's perfectly all right to ask for a few pointers and whatnot. I'd take you out, but I've got small kids and a small business. Rarely to never go out myself.

Who mounted and set up your scope?

4 clicks is an inch at 100 yards on most scopes......just relax and squeeze, shoot a multitude at the same spot to see if it groups, then adjust your scope to the middle of the group.

Upon reading your intro I would offer to help a new shooter but would soon ditch that thought at the part where you offer to bring along adult beverages.

I'm by no means very skilled but the easiest way for me is set up a grid target at 50m and another at 100m. Remove your bolt and look through your barrel and centre the 50m target in it, then adjust your scope to the centre as well. Now put your bolt back in, load up and Fire five shots aiming at the centre and see where it groups (do not try to adjust after every shot). Now adjust your scope turrets to move the group you just shot

ex: your group is high 2 inches and left 2 inches. What your turrets do is move your bullet impact, meaning you want to move the group 2 inches down and 2 right. So on your scope turrets youll see on one turret an R with an arrow --> this means turn in that direction to move the impact right, same for up and down with the turret on top. Most scopes 1 click is 1/4 inch at 100 So at 50m 1 click = 1/8 inch meaning for this example to move the bullet impact right 2 inches at 50m you would need to turn the R turret in the direction of the arrow 16 clicks. For the up and down, most scopes are marked with an UP ----> so to bring the impact down, turn the turret in the opposite direction of the arrow 16 clicks.

Now shoot another five round to confirm. If it's hitting where your aiming move to 100 and repeat. If the group is where you're aiming, then you're done. If it's off, then you can use the the value printed on the turret now 1 click = 1/4 inch at 100. Meaning 1 inch of bullet impact movement is 4 clicks on your scopes turret.

I hope you can understand my jibberish. I might go up to PCDHFC this Friday or Saturday. Pm me if you have any questions

Get it on paper at 25yrds.
Close to zero @25yrds. Will put you pretty dam close at 100yrds.

Then fine tune it to what you want. I like 1-2" high @ 100

Whoa - did I ask something that's taboo?

I just figured I could save having to buy sandbags/equipment (I mounted the scope myself and need to make sure it's level in all axis), and some time and possibly ammo by meeting someone who was going to be at the range that day anyway, and taking up 20-30 minutes of their time... But no worries guys, I'll watch youtube and figure it out myself.

And the offer of beers was definitely a thank you for after the fact, I don't drink and shoot!

Mission Rod and Gun is open for public sight in this Saturday, $20.00 for the day, I may be there in the afternoon helping a friend get sighted in. I'd be more than
happy to give you a hand. No gratitude's req'd. Look for Marshal on the sign in sheet.

You can buy a day card at Poco for sighting in at 25m, 50m, 100m, or 200m. It's very likely that someone there would be willing to help you out if you just show up.

If you want to have a go yourself, you can roughly bore sight by pulling the bolt. With the rifle resting sturdily on sandbags look through the bore and line it up with a circular target at 100m. Then look through the scope. Adjust the cross hairs so that they are centered on the target when the target is centered by looking through the bore. This will generally get you on paper. After that it's easy. I've used that technique on many rifles and it hasn't failed me yet.

Chris.

I do the same thing except at 25yds. My eyes are so bad I can't see where the bore is pointing at 100yds esp if the rifle is a small caliber gun!
For most non- magnum calibers, you will be close at 100 what you see at 25.
I do 3 shots. 1 to "bore sight", 1 after re-aligning the scope to the first round. 1 to confirm I didn't screw up.
After that, I shoot 3 rds at 100 for a group, fine tune if needed and shoot 3 more rounds. A lot more experienced guys can sight in with way less!

Once upon a time I shouted out here for someone to let me see the reloading process, before I decided to jump in. Glad I did it. Met one of my best friends, and a friend for life.

I belong to Abbotsford, and happy to assist. I need to go soon to zero in a brand new scope on my .308 as well. $10 guest fee, N/C for me as free advice is worth what you pay for it.

If you are coming through poco, I have a bore sighter that can get you pretty close. Any adjustments should be pretty simple from there. I'd be happy to help you out anytime.
