Does anyone know of a good online source for real moose sounds? I am planning on hunting the big swamp donkeys this fall, and I have a very basic understanding of some of their sounds, but I would really like to hear the real thing. Some instruction on when and how to use these calls would be excellent too. Thanks!:D

If you can come close to imitating a cow call and a bull grunt, you can call moose during the rut. Do a Google search and you'll find some sound clips. Find fresh sign and try cow calls early & late in the day. If amourous bulls are around, they'll respond and it's quite exciting when they answer and "burp" every step as they walk in to you :D Around this neck of the woods, we have antler restrictions during the prime rut which is about the first couple weeks in October. You call 'em in but have to count points before you can shoot. It can be frustrating to bring in several bulls over the course of a week with antler spreads in the 50" range and not be able to shoot due to the bulls not having at least three points on one brow palm or at least ten points on one side :bangHead: But nonetheless, it gets pretty damn exciting when they get up close and personal in the thick spruce ;) :D

I agree. Pretty much anyone can call them in during the rut. It's prior to or just after, or when one just won't come in close enough to the call that the real calling starts.

Try Youtube there is lots of moose hunting videos shots and some have calls/grunts on them. There is a video made by a female photographer from Quebec studing moose in Gaspe that has her interacting with moose during the rut. Some CGN may know the name, I think her first name was Gabriel ?????, excellent information and it also was on TV.

The first night in camp, one of the guys was playing a moose calling tape, and while lying in bed, we were all giving our best imitations.
The next day, Mick and I were stopped for lunch, and a bull was calling, down in the trees on the other side of the creek. I glassed for 15 minutes, then gave three cow calls. Within five minutes he was crossing the creek, and within one more he was down. That was my first moose, taken with a .338 Winchester and 250 grain Noslers at 400 paces.
The second one was held for about five minutes while I called intermitently, until I crossed the swamp to the only tree around. Same rifle and 210 grain Noslers, paced off at 250. Calling does work.

You can get a tape at Wall-Mart.
Dont worry so much about sounding like the tape. Not all moose sound the same just like people. Its more about knowing what part of the rut your in,what call to use and how often you call.Making sure not to over call.
I work in Algonquin Pk all year and get alot of time to practice.I have even had Bulls come to me using a domestic cow bawl, and cows come to a domestic calf bawl.

Her name is Gisele Benoit. when she did the original moose videos she's was mainly an artist (painter) rather than a photographer. she appears to now be into wildlife filming.

according to the website, unfortunately the video tapes she did (2 moose ones (both awesome), 1 grouse one) are no longer available ( CBC broadcast at least one)). she is now doing a wildlife series ( to include up close & personal with wolves) which will contain extracts of the old moose videos and will be available on DVD. if it's anything like the moose ones it'll be awesome.
