I just bought my third 870 Wingmaster in my life time. Is it just me..... have the new Remingtons come down in quality compared to the ones in yesteryear? Whats going on with the finest pump action shotgun ever devised????? Don't get me wrong I think the Wingmaster is still a fine if not the best pump out there, action wise, but the fit and finish isn't there any more. What do you think??

Just wondering what your vote would be for the best pump ever a model 31??

The the op. Yes the newer wingmsters donot have the quailty of parts, plus fit and finish of the vintage ones. I like the early to mid 60's myself.;)
 
Things arent like they used to be.

I handled a new Wingmaster a few months ago. Didnt like it.

My 80's Wingmaster will not be going anywhere. I contemplate buying a new pump shotgun every once in a while then go use my baby again and forget all about it.
 
I knew the express isn't as good as a wingmaster, but the wingmaster quality has fallen too? Its one of my considerations for a first gun, but if the wm quality has dropped it's likely off my list. Or look for an older one.

Stock quality isn't as good as the vintage. its veneer! I'm not sure when remington started using it. Unscrew your butt pad you'll be able to tell.

The Remington 870 Wingmaster has been around since 1951 and is still currently being manufactured today.
With 10million + firearms in circulation it maybe the greatest selling pump action shotgun.
As for the veneer comment, that may very well be on the Remington Express's and not a 870 Wingmaster which has Walnut furniture.
A far superior wood to the veneer or laminate that you might be thinking of.

I had an 870 Wingmaster 28ga built in the early 80s that I foolishly sold off (I'm not much of a pump action user). The superior build quality end-to-end was very evident compared to the recent manufactures.

The Ithaca M37 looks to be a very well finished firearm other than the very odd looking deeply curved pistol grip.

Its a Walnut Veneer, do some searching on google. Thats why it doesnt look as good as a solid walnut stock, like the ones used in the Remington days. I'm pretty sure they went veneer or "semi fancy" when Cerberus bought Remington.
The big green isn't the same Remington that produced the fine quality Wingmasters that we all grew up with. The OPs 870 is still good quality, but not as good as my 1969, and my 69 isn't built as well as my model 31, IMO.
