Hello CGN,
I am about to pull the trigger on a rimfire mares leg and it just dawned on me that the buckhorn sights may be an issue.

Can anyone comment on how the sight radius has been? If not, has anyone mounted an optic with success? Which kind?

This is gonna be a gopher/plinking gun and I estimate minute of popcan at 50 meters is reasonable

I Appreciate your time

This is a concern due to the short sight radius.

I added a Marbles tang mounted peep sight to mine, but then I also mounted a full length butt stock on mine so I dont really have a Mares Leg anymore, but rather a short barreled carbine.:D

Perhaps a reciever mounted peep like those made by "Skinner" would improve the sight radius but also keep it in the Mares Leg configuration.

When playing with mine to get it on target using the original rear sight I had to completely remove the elevation ramp, (otherwise bullets struck too high)

I have the henry mares leg in .45 and it shoots great. It is a heavier gun not sire if that makes a diff. I know the sights are a bit different but at 25 yds I can blow the snot out of a three inch steel disc. I did have to raise the rear sight. It's a semi buck horn sight but if you are used to buckhorns you should be fine.

It's a really fun little boom stick.

I like the factory sights on mine but a pop can at 50 is pushing it for me. On both of mine I had to completely remove the rear ramp elevator and they were dead on. I've mouned optics and was happiest with a compact 2-6x28 and it got my groups from 4" at 50 down to 2" (from a rest with dynapoints) different ammo may help. I find them hard to keep still but fun non the less. Aaron

Much appreciated all. @ Gasoline boy, I had tried a friends Mare leg just like yours. The impact of a .45 on a gopher is....a sight to see. In any case, a range report to follow soon

I have a henry ML in 22 and found it was shooting high with rear sight at its lowest setting I had talked to someone with a savage trapper (the one with the 13 inch barrel) who was having the same problem and he ended up filing something on the rear sight to lower it - I was not doing this to my new ML- I called Henry and explained what was going on and they were GREAT - mailed me a new front sight with a higher blade at no charge - that gave me a range of adjustment with the rear sight - shoots fine now! Did all this in the summer so hope I got the relationship with the sights correct - was a while back now - point is give Henry a call and you will most likely be able to get what you need to bring the POI to zero..

That is a fantastic picture! The only thing that would make it better is if there was muzzle flash in the pic.
