Calling Ontario Wolf/Coyote Hunters!!

I need some help from knowledgable veterans of the Wolf/Coyote hunting types.

In the Ontario regulations wolf falls under the small game catergory. Small game looks like it limits the firearm caliber to sub-.275 and shotgun smaller than #2 shot.

So does this mean that I cant legally shoot a wolf with my .308 win?

I already bought the tag, I just need to know if I see one out moose hunting if I can take it with my moose rifle or if I'll need to carry multiple rifles.

I know the .308 will probably make a mess of the hide, but I'm more interested in population control and maybe getting a head mount done.

i know many people who have killed them with there slug guns during deer season. if you see it kill it. i also believe that calibre restriction applies to lands north of hwy 9 or 89 i cant remember exactly. good luck
 
the <.275 rule only applies in certain townships.

The only caliber restriction that applies for the rest of the province is during deer and moose seasons.

Also you might need a wolf/yote tag if you are in certain WMU's.
 
Its not that hard to understand. You can disregard the township thing since in the Northwest you're not in one of them. The other does apply to you. If you DO NOT possess a deer, elk, moose, or bear tag during an open season for deer, elk, moose, or bear in your WMU, then you may not use a rifle bigger then .275. Since you specifically say you will be moose hunting, you are fine to use a .308

Think of it this way; if you were a CO and came across a guy with a .338Win Mag who told you he was out hunting coyotes (and didnt possess a deer, elk, moose or bear tag) what would you think? I would certainly be getting suspicious at the least. This law takes out that suspicion. If you have one of those tags, you are fine.

If you are hunting small game in an area where there is an open
season for deer, moose, elk, or black bear, you may not possess
or use a rifle of greater muzzle energy than 400 foot-pounds or
shells loaded with ball or with shot larger than No. 2 shot (or
if using non-toxic shot, you may not use steel shot larger than
triple BBB steel shot, or bismuth shot that is larger than double
BB bismuth shot), unless you possess a valid licence to hunt
deer, moose, elk or black bear as the case may be.

A person hunting small game may not carry or use a
rifle of greater calibre than a .275-calibre rifle, except a
muzzle-loading gun, in the geograhic areas of of Brant,
Chatham-Kent, Durham, Elgin, Essex, Haldimand, Halton,
Hamilton, Huron, Lambton, Middlesex, Niagara, Norfolk,
Northumberland, Oxford, Peel, Perth, Toronto, Waterloo,
Wellington or York
