Does anyone know off the top of their head, what exactly has to be done to change a bolt knob on a Rem700?

Is it already removable/threaded, or is the bolt+knob one solid piece?

Thanks for any help!

It requires forming the present knob into an extension of the handle so it can be threaded. It can be done with a hacksaw and a grinder and a die. It depends on your skills how well it turns out.

There is a jig made by Pacific Tool and Gauge that allows a bolt to be held in a lathe, so that the knob can be turned down. Saves a lot of grinder, file and hacksaw time, results are predictable. Just got one of these, and it makes the job much more straightforeward.
A 700 handle can be changed, but it is brazed on, so installing a new one is a pretty serious undertaking.

you can get it done for like $60-$100 with the knob, pretty cheap if you ask me. I think Allen Gun Works does it for $35
