Hey guys, I'm pretty new to coyote hunting but the fire has been lit so I'm trying to learn as much a possible to make me more successful this year. Last year I didn't call in any in the 3-4 times I went. It was late in the season and I really never had a chance to go more. I did call a fox in to about 15 yards until I stopped it. It was out of season and I was using my .223, which is illegal for them so I didn't pull the trigger. This is in PEI for the record. I went to newfoundland for vacation and went hunting there. Called about 6 days and only called one in. I didn't get a shot and we will just say being a newb I screwed up and it still haunts my dreams haha.
Now my calling sequence for the day I called the yote in was rabbit distress for about 30 minutes. I call for about 2 minutes then stop for 1. Then 10 minutes of invitation howls and barks and then coyote distress. We were on the stand for 45 minutes and when we turned around, directly behind us there he was. Big coyote I estimate at 50lbs. Wind was in our face, should it be going side to side so if they circle downwind they won't be behind us?
Calling the fox in I did a rabbit distress for maybe 5 minutes until I saw movement in the distance.
Now is that calling sequence wrong? What are yours?
My plan is to hit them hard this year as I'll have a full season and all the gear now. Last year was plagued by waiting for PALs and buying gear. We have about 15 locations this year as opposed to one.
What do you guys think?
Thanks,
Nic
