Camo - Commercial Hunting gear or Military gear?

I have been looking for some hunting camo (a jacket and pants) to pick up at Canadian Tire and TSC, but have not had any luck. It has already all been picked over. Even still, I am never impressed with the quality of the camo gear I find at those stores (Rocky, Dickies, Coleman, etc). The material seems so.... weak, like I could rip it will very little effort, and I find myself looking more and more at military camo like the Crye MultiCam stuff they have at Seals Action Gear.

I am not really looking for the bulky, insulated, winter gear, as I can only afford one set, and I prefer layering. The stuff DZ has just seems so heavy duty, and tough, made with quality materials and workmanship.

Anyone else feel the same, and use military camo? If so which camo do you find best suited for fall in Ontario?

Thanks

For camo gear, IF I get the urge to use it (rare & usually only for stuff like paintball), I use stuff I get from the local military surplus place (in Lethbridge, it's GI Jens... Good stuff & good prices I find. I got my last 2 pairs of "hiking boots", aka combats, there).

I find even more important than camo, is the ability to walk VERY quietly & to NOT chat it up like you're at a coffee shop. Add in the bit about knowing when to STOP & be very very quiet and most everything is then set.

Remember, pretty colours are to snare the hunter, NOT the prey... Deer, Elk, Antelope & Moose are ALL colourblind. :D

I think all we have near me in the states are ####'s and Gander Mountain. Everybody always raves about their prices... but I looked in their flyer and wasn't impressed to say the least. Maybe their in store special are better.

I feel ashamed to say it but it's such a great deal..... local wallymarts are sellin remington 6in1 parkas for 79.99   :runaway: i'm going to have to buy 2.

Much of the military stuff is made of heavy or re-enforced materials that are kind of noisey. Commercial patterns come in such a variety that one can select a pattern most ideal for concealing ones self from an uncooperative landowner.

Becareful. Thats what I bought. The inside jacket (warmest one) has very weak material. I ripped it walking through thorn bushes while deer hunting last week.

I did just get a Remmy hunter orange 6-in-1 jacket from WalMart regular $99.99 on sale for $39.00... Now THAT was a great deal!

Military Camo

Durring the summer and early fall and winter i have found that the East German 'rain' camo works very well. The material is not noisy at all, but the pants have no belt loops, i need suspenders to wear them. As it gets colder, I turn to Cabelas 'cover' parka and pants when the snow flys. I am interested in Preadator winter white camo though, i might give it a try for coyotes this winter.

I like the quality of the real mil stuff but fleece hunting camo clothing is so much more quite in the bush that I like it for hunting.

www.sportsmansguide.com has some of the best prices of new and used military surplus clothing. Also check out the two pair of swedish, new, military boots for under $20.-

I am impressed with the brand new german "fleck" camo parka for under $ 20.-, and the same parka with a liner for under $ 30.-

The german national flag on the shoulders of this fine parka are very easy to remove from this very quit parka.

I have never used any camo clothing before this hunting season, and I have noticed some difference in my favor while hunting, since I started to hunt wearing "fleck" camo :)

Only 2 ways a guy should go for Camo clothing, Cheap and generic or Pricey and Technical.
Wal-mart and Canadian tire will have the generic Rocky type stuff, not especially quiet, hard to claim it is weatherproof but the price is right and it should keep you reasonably warm and sometimes dry.
Then there is the best of the best, SitkaGear - Highly technical clothing that will last your hunting life - New to the market in Canada but starting to find it's way into stores this year, Wholesale sports carries it now, they have a website SitkaGear.com

What ever you get, make sure it goes well with the BLAZE ORANGE we have towear here in Ontario during the Moose and Deer hunts.

I've found some good deals at Bass Pro here in the GTA, but also like to order from Cabelas when they have sales on.

Cammo clothing is way overrated ;

Indeed, IMHO Deer will smell, and hear you long before they see you, and I have had them walk right up to me at times the wind was in the right direction, and I wasn't moving.

But methinks Camo helps you hide from fellow hunters when it is safer to do so then be seen by them. :D

My kit is a set of military surplus Swiss alpenflage pants, and jacket with fricken pockets everywhere.
Heavy, but very functional...best $40 I have spent on gear in a long time.

Mosts of the time, military forces try to be pragmatic in regards to their clothing needs, and most military forces are ready to spend top dollars for the right cuts and sizes, which also translate to very well made hunting clothing. Therefore, I find new and used military clothing to be real bargains as well as very useful while hunting.

I start to believe that camo clothing make some difference while hunting.

Depends what you are hunting. Camo is very important for hunting turkey and geese. Camo is not required or even very useful for hunting big game with a rifle. Most gear is made in camo patterns for marketing purposes, not because you need it! I don't believe it is any real advantage for rifle hunters. If you're trying for a close in bow shot, I think it has some merit. Just buy the best, most functional pants and jacket you can find, camo/color is VERY secondary.
