Camo - Commercial Hunting gear or Military gear?

I like this american ACU......but I'd need to buy the couch to put in my blind as well :D

Then again, why is most animals born with build in camo colors ? From that, I reason that camoflage does work in nature. Otherwise the big games we hunt would have all kinds of bright colors ?

Deer elk and moose can be very hard to detect in daytime, unless they move.

I find that after I started to wear camo, I get closer to the game animals before they run, and they stay around longer to figure out what I am :)

I wear on old set of CF Cadpat when rifle hunting, only because I am getting sick of tearing my stuff all to hell on barbwire fencing I am more of a bowhunter, so I acquired pretty much the whole Predator line to mix and match for the season / terrain.

I am not entirely convinced that camo is the be all and end all, as I have had just as many deer trip over me wearing blaze orange as in full camo, but I will take any advantage I can get. Scent control / wind direction...that's the real issue.

I agree that camo is for the most part overrated and designed to provide the best sale pitch, but I almost accidently ended up with a huge collection of the stuff anyway.

I didn't start out to acquire camo clothing, it just started to accumulate as I bought practical pieces of clothing I found here and there.

First was a pair of new heavy wool German wool pants for winter hunting. They turned to be too heavy then I lucked into a 1952 Belfast Woolen Mills pair of British wool army pants at the VV boutique.

Then I found a pair of the German Flecktar pants and I liked them for the pockets, then the collection really started to grow.

Now I have three pairs of German flecktar pants, two jackets, a fleece jacket and a parka. Mostly for big game hunting in spring fall and winter here in BC. it's amazing how the red tones help blend in anywhere. Even spring bear hunting where you'd imagine most foliage is green. In fact I often find myself in a lot of reddish brown huckleberry leaves.

I also found some camo fleece shirts and pants at Army and Navy for $10.00 a piece so I bought two of each. The shirts are warm and practical with the breast pockets. They are not the highest quality but they are nice under the parka for the cold weather hunting. There was a surplus store on Front Street in New West a few doors down selling the same items for $45.00 each. I wonder where he got them?

I use commercial camo for waterfowling, Max4 waders and jacket, though I got a light rain jacket from Wing Supply (check 'em out-big sales) in a timber pattern that is good for early season big game and waterfowling too.

www.sportmansguide.com has cheap and brand new and used military
surplus camo clothing. I can recommend the brand new german "fleck camo" parka for under $ 20.-, the german flag on the shoulder are easy to remove. Sportmandsguide have also lots of military camo pants.

Walmart, CT, GI Joes in the states, some local hunting and wannabe "tactical" shops. I use whatever's cheap and practical. I have a full camo outfit right from hat to boots but I don't bother descenting anything. I only wear camo when out hunting because it my warmest clothes and I wear camo every other day of the year as well, why not when hunting eh?

I've actually been just as successful when out hunting wearing regular jeans and t-shirt. I agree with camo being over rated, I just wear it out of habit. Oh, and I own a set of camo Irish Setter boots, they're damn good even in 2' of snow for keeping my feet warm and dry all day (even when quadding). I think I paid $120 for mine at GI Joes in Bellingham, WA. They're 8" boots with 800 gr Thinsulate and Gortex outter. I find they do the trick for me.. LR

You and Long walker have the most sensible posts here.

Listen Bud if you want quality look into White Water.

Everyone is out after Gortex and it’s that No# 1 animal saver out there. Yes clothing for Rain days only, but for them silent calm days look for polar fleece or cloth.

Market stores like TSC or Canadian Tire only deal with one supplier and what they have is what every store has take it or leave it.

Plus look at getting a CF Extreme Cold Weather Parka (new and used) from here: fcsurplus.ca/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=13704

There cheaper too (but only in OD or Navy)!
