My uncle insists on wraping his 300mag in camo tape. It's funny, it went from super accurate to 3" at 100. I've told him a dozen times it's the camo tape, but he refuses to believe me.
I know some guys will call BS but my buddy taped his stainless Ruger and it threw the POI off by a few inches @ 100 yards. He ripped off the tape and made a sock for the barrel out of camo that fits loosely and it seems to work fine.
I believe you fully on POI shift. That's why I zero for the coyote load, 100gr PSP@ 3360 usually, after its all wrapped up. For field use at the distances I would shoot, which is ~400yds, i don't use a bipod only sling, it's fine.
These last few years, where we are now unlimited in coyote season in bullet weight, I use my usual deer weight ammo into the coyote season. I don't see or shoot enough to worry about cost. This year I'll note the POI shift, if substantial, from uncovered deer rifle to wrapped up coyote rig, and repost observations.
I knew a genius who took off his scope to wrap his new Weatherby in tape. Re-installed the scope, and could not figure out why he was hitting dirt 20yards in front of the 100 yard target. He had a couple wraps of tape on the rear ring.
