We were blessed with excellent weather. Barney and Tim ran their usual smooth fast program. I was in the car, driving home at 2:00.

My scores would improve if I did not have mental glitches, like shooting 2 shots when I should have fired 4, etc.

Here are two videos we took. In one of them you can see I forgot to put the rifle sling around my neck. I had to drop rifle on the ground to draw my pistol. The list of mental errors gets longer and longer....

In the other you can hear me reminding my son to aim low initially and then higher and higher as we get closer to the target. For those of you who don't shoot CQB (short range) the sights are about 2.5" above the bore, so if you don't aim high, the bullets will strike 2" low. At ranges beyond 25 yards, the opposite is true. The bullet rises above the sight line, so you have to aim low. It is all these little details as you shoot against the clock that makes CQB so much fun.

I started shooting match two instead of match one (two to each target instead of one to each....hard to get off aimed rounds at two targets in 4 seconds...at least for me). I realized my mistake after the first "and....stop" but I was sort of f**ked. By luck I managed to get about the right number of rounds on each target.

I should also not handicap myself by loading only two pistol rounds instead of three.:)

Great times were had by all. I truly appreciate all the help we received from the competitors during the setup and teardown of the match. Good workers, fast teardown, quick departure for all ! It does not get better. We have a great community of shooters and I sincerely adore all the help! :D

Cheers,
Barney

I had a splendid day of mediocre shooting, but was fortunate to be wearing my "Jimmy Buffet" shirt, so did ok at the end of it all. Those who want to know what all the best dressed over the hill wanna be operators are wearing would do well to follow my gaudy example! LOL. :-D

Great time as usual, thanks to Tim and Barney as always for running a superbly orchestrated match!

Hey Plink, was that a 5.11 tactical "jimmy buffet"shirt? I'd like to get one.:D

Okay... here is Plink's inspiration. :D

Back in 2003 at the NSCC National Matches run by the DCRA, I just could not resist. I had to shoot the Matches 1-12 in a Hawaiian shirt... part of my roots, I guess!

Damn.... that rifle would make a great DM rifle right about NOW! :ninja:

Ah, to be younger and more foolish!

Cheers,
Barney

CQB 3 – Things I learned

It doesn’t hurt to turn up your variable scope for snaps and rapids. I might not help but it does not hurt

It does hurt if you don’t turn it back down for short distance shooting

Load enough rounds in each mag

Make sure you listen to the RO for the course of fire for the string. Shoot the correct course of fire.

We can stay in the aim. DO THAT. You really limit yourself on time of you waste a second acquiring the target when you should already be on.

All stages that require mag changes have plenty of time to do it. Slow is Smooth, Smooth is Fast

Always load the mag that is hardest to reach FIRST so you don’t have to do the twist during a stage.

Hold your rifle in one hand to show clear before transition. Have your strong hand reaching for your pistol.

I am nervy with my first couple of pistol shots. Two to the body first and then take careful aim at the head. Repeat. My second target always looks better than my first.

CQB is really, really, really fun (Okay I knew that before this match) :D

I was a "student" recently for a course being taught by a police C8 instructor trainee. One drill this service uses is to pull the carbine back in close to the chest with the support hand. Basically same position as firing strong hand only with the support hand up against the chest. Muzzle up, slightly to the left, well controlled, draw and fire with the strong hand. Of course, if you want two hands on the pistol, the carbine will be swung clear and left hanging on its sling. Depends on the distance to the target.
For a variation on body armour drill, try the Australian vertical stitch technique. Five shots per exposure. Center of mass, throat, headx3.

Issue is that this is for points and safety Tiriaq. So, on the safety aspect, he must show the rifle is clear before transitioning. And the pistol must be 2 to body, 1 to head for the points.

Different styles for different shoots.
The thought with the transition drill that I mentionned is that the carbine is under control, so that clearing it is not an issue, before drawing the pistol. Does require hot holster, though.
The vertical stitch is just a variation on the standard 2 plus 1. Makes for a different match, different challenge.

A great day, crappy scores on my part.
Fast and efficient set up and tear down.
Great bunch of shooters, as usual.
Thanks Barney, Plink and Tim for a great day on the range.

Things I learned at the match:

Don't buy expensive rifles/optics and cheap out on your LBV... It'll f*ck you over.

I shot like crap, but still had an awesome day.
It was a great, well run match, lots of fun. Thanks Tim and Hungry!
