My hunting partners and I were sipping chilled beverages around the campfire after a day of deer scouting last weekend and the topic of "ideal calibers" for particular uses came up.

Curious to see what the CGN community thinks. It's an academic exercise of sorts, but we had a great spirited discussion about it. Our only criteria was that the caliber had to be chambered in "regular" factory rifles.

1) Varmint
2) Mountain (deer, sheep, etc.)
3) Close Range Thick Cover (deer, moose, elk)
4) Big Game (anything that walks in North America)

1) 22-250 Remington
2) .270 Winchester
3) 45-70
4) 338-06

BTW , your questions is about cartridges not calibre. The calibre is the size of the hole in the barrel. For example the 30-30 and 300 RUM are both 30 calibre.

Since its a spirited discussion and all.....

1) 223 Rem (It's a good performing round that's readily available in many platforms).

2) 308 win (I'd say 30-06, but the 308 is the same using 165gr and under, plus can be had in a shorter action/shorter barrel).

3) 35 Whelen (Because it's awesome!).

4) 375 H&H (I wouldn't purposely use anything less on a Grizz / Bison).

Depending on th me definition of "ideal". If you only needed four calibers to do those four tasks I would go with something that is the most readily available and efficient.

1)Varmint - .243 win
2) Mountain (deer, sheep, etc.) - .308 win
3) Close Range Thick Cover (deer, moose, elk) - .358 win
4) Big Game (anything that walks in North America) - .300wm or 30-06

Reasoning: with the family of .308 cartridges you can use the same case for three calibers. And with the .308 case you can use a short and light rifle for mountain/bush carry. Along with the .308 itself performing well in a short barrel. I'm undecided with 300wm or 30-06. It also keeps loading simpler and ammo is everywhere.

1) Varmint 6xc
2) Mountain (deer, sheep, etc.) 7mm-08ai
3) Close Range Thick Cover (deer, moose, elk) 308 marlin express
4) Big Game (anything that walks in North America) 280ai

1) Varmint- .223 or .22/250
2) Mountain (deer, sheep, etc.)- .270, 7x57, .30/06
3) Close Range Thick Cover (deer, moose, elk)- 9.3x62
4) Big Game (anything that walks in North America) 9.3x62

Here's what I own that fits on your list.

1) Varmint .223
2) Mountain (deer, sheep, etc.) 270Win
3) Close Range Thick Cover (deer, moose, elk) 35Whelen
4) Big Game (anything that walks in North America) see # 3
