Hi CNG,

Just reloaded 3 x 5 rounds of test loads with 45 ACP 200gr TC Campro. Used Titegroup starting at 4,7 with 0,1gr increments, 5 rounds each load. Prior to do real rounds, I did a dummy without crimp and when I tested it in my 1911 to see if it chambered well from the mag, it dit but the bullet got gradually into the case form 1,180 to 1.130. I concluded the 0,464 taper crimp was essential for that bullet.

When I started reloading my real rounds, There was a thin hair of copper peeling form the bullet, nothing crazy and the neck seemed smoothly crimped. May by a little lack of flaring could have caused the shaving. That got my attention and I measured some commercial ammo I had to see 0,470 with AE and 0,466 for Blazer Brass 230gr.

I am a little concerned that the Campro 0,464 might be too much and as a new reloader, I am a little scared of getting overpressure created by the crimp. My OAL is dead on the 1,180 recommanded and I am still 0,2gr from the max.

Any experience following the 0,464 crimp with Campro ?

Thanks.

this is just my opinion but I don't think you will have any problems, I have loaded 10's of thousands of plated .45 in all weights campro and berry's so I went and checked several examples of 3 different rounds that I have loaded. the same 200's you have berry's 200 swc and 230 campro's all crimped with a lee factory crimp die set at what I feel is a very aggressive crimp set the same for all and I found measurements from .464 to .468 and have never had a problem and all my ammo if shot from a rest or when I really do my part will shoot small ragged holes at 10-15 yards.

Too much crimping won't cause catastrophic failure, but excessive distortion of the bullet may not be good for accuracy. SAAMI specifies a case mouth diameter of .473" -.006", which would make for a .468" minimum. Going by the SAAMI specification, .464" is undersize. I would use a diameter somewhere between .468"-.471". The objective of taper crimping is to only go a little beyond removing the flaring of the case mouth.
