Can 870 12g 2 3/4 barrel handle 3 shell?

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. I would seriousely hope that anyone careless and foolish enough to do this would never pass such firearm on to someone else.

When I read the original post, I thought it must be a joke. But when he explained himself further in his follow up post, I can kind of understand his logic. His gun is capable of 3" shells, so he wasn't sure if the barrel mattered if he happened to replace it with one that is limited to 2 3/4.

I think we should give him a break. He wasn't sure, so he asked. It's not like he fired it. Good for him for asking a question which many would be too embarrassed to ask.

Apparently the pal coarse is not in-depth enough.

They do go over it in the course obviously, but they don't get into modifications of guns, which is kind of what confused the OP.
Like I said, he wasn't sure so he asked. Gotta start somewhere

I watched a video a few years back of two "experts" from a shop who actually fired a shotgun with 3"" ammo in a 2 3/4" gun, and fired a 12 gauge with a 20 in front of it with no ill effect - I have also seen the result of the same 12-20 condition in a Wingmaster that was fired and the gun came right apart!!!
No way do I mess with that stuff, I don't even shoot steel in a tight choked gun even though I know people who do- I have also seen what happens when things go bad . Good of the OPP too ask the question, better to ask a question some think is stupid than to try it and find out the bad way!

There is a lot of misinformation on the subject of firing a 3 inch shell in a 2 and 3/4 inch chamber.

The manufacturers of the firearms and of the ammunition do not recommend it... and warn against doing it... but it will seldom result in more than increased pressure and recoil.

The manufacturers would not produce 3 inch ammo that would blow up a 2 & 3/4 inch barrel... too much liability there... and that's why the next step in ammo was to go to 3 & 1/2 inch ammo... it will not fit in anything but a 3 & 1/2 inch chamber...

I have never seen a barrel blown up by firing a 3 inch in a 2 & 3/4 inch barrel.

Hi, I have 870 tactical DM for 12g 2 3/4" or 3" shell. Looking to buy a barrel only handles 2 3/4". is it ok to use this barrel for 3" shell?

Strength wise, yes, it will handle it, but the chamber is too short and the shell will impede the shot column in the forcing cone and spike the pressure.

If you have a magnum receiver and a 2.75" chamber, you can use a long forcing cone reamer or a chambering reamer to lengthen your chamber and make it safe to fire 3" from If you receiver only has an ejection port sized for 2.75" shells, you are out of luck as the empties will jam in the port if you try to run 3" through it.

I have a long forcing cone reamer in 12g and made my Cooey single shot and the spare 870 barrel I bought from 2.75 to 3". My 870 is a magnum receiver so it worked out for me.

That wouldn't work with my .243 Win and .35 Whelen. I use 7mm08/.308 and and .270Win/.30-06 brass to form into .243 and .35 ammo respectively. I have exactly 20 .243 headstamped cases and 90 something .35Whelen headstamped cases, the rest are not properly headstamped. ALL my centerfire ammo is handloaded by me for my rifles. My rifles are fired ONLY by me or under my direct supervision with my handloads, so there is no confusion.

3" Steel would cause me some big nerves out of a 2 3/4" barrel
3" Lead would have me less worried.

I have seen the effects personally, don't do it. Also, don't use gas if it says "Diesel Fuel Only"....

lol in the old of days no direct injection nor def we used to put gasoline in diesel when it was really cold. russian drivers are still doing it in the north with volvo trucks ...
