My friend is comming from the states to visit .Is he alowwed to bring over 1000 rounds of 223 for me .Is there any restrictions on the type of 223 he can bring in ?

US BATF/Customs type would want your friend to be in possession of an export permit...

Canada customs, will want to make sure you don't have armour piercing/incindiary rounds ...

other than that... i don't think there's anything else??? i'm not sure if canada customs will want your US friend to be in possession of a PAL/POL

HR hit most of the points.

On the US side, he'd need an export permit, which frankly he won't get. However, US citizens are allowed to export ammo when leaving the US for hunting or target shooting.

On the Canadian side, I think he might have a problem at the border with the ammo if he doesn't have a temporary permit.

Us needs the export permit or as above mentioned target practice works for export....

For the ammo he is bringing you he needs to delcare as a gift, and then pay GST on the value. Customs will hold it and you will have to show up and present your POL/PAL to show you can legally have the ammo. If you are picj=king him up anyways he can tell the agent that and they will get you and verify your POL/PAl right there and release the ammo on payment of the GST.

If he does not delacre as a gift he needs to justify why he has 1000rnds of ammo for this trip (competiton or what?) No reasonable explanation - problem

"...pay GST on the value..." And PST in Ontario. Plus duty. The Free Trade Act does not apply to shooting stuff.
From the CFC's web page.
"Buying or Importing Ammunition
A valid PAL, a confirmed Non-Resident Firearm Declaration or a Temporary Borrowing Licence (for Non-Residents) will allow you to buy ammunition in Canada. As well, you may bring limited amounts into Canada with you.
Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN) is responsible for regulating the import of ammunition under the Explosives Act. You may contact NRCAN for information on how much ammunition can be imported for personal use. For information on how much ammunition can be imported duty free, please contact the Canada Border Services Agency."

Incendiary sure, but armour piercing is allowed for rifle ammo. Its only pistol ammo that can't be armour piercing.

didn't know that... musta missed reading that in the other threads about AP ammo... good to know

Centerfire cartriges are covered at 7% duty under most favoured nation status, manufactured in the US of A allows for the United States Preferential rate of 0%.so it's just GST and PST.

Call and ask them
Canada Border Service Agency:

From outside Canada, call:

5000 rounds can be imported by a resident of Canada, with PAL/POL, and then pay the taxes on the purchase cost.

That's right, on our (Canada) end, but who is going to sell it to you? You have a whole other countries laws to contend with, one of them is that it's illegal to sell ammo to non-residents in the US----so you can't go down and buy it. The other is to find someone to ship it and do the proper paperwork (good luck), and then the export permits, that in all likelyhood, would be denied on the US side......

You can buy it if you have a state hunting licence. That what buffalo gun center told me(& they sell surplus) :D

yes you can buy it, and be in possession of it (if you got your state permit), but you aren't allowed to export it /w out the export permit. You'll have to shoot your 1000 round of surplus in the US before you leave. :) (which may not be a bad thing)

i called the BATF about that one a few years ago... =(

I don't what to take over this thread but my daughter is coming home from Florida for the Xmas holidays with her boyfriend so can he bring me a few boxes of ammo as an xmas pressy or say he is going to do some target shooting with me and he is useing his own ammo.I don't want to get him in trouble at the border but I would really like him to bring me up a few boxes of ammo.
Thanks, 88

I don't think an American citizen needs an export permit - that's for Cdns buying in the states and bringing it back. He can buy it and transport it legally himself. He simply tells customs that he is going to be shooting it in Canada himself over the holidays with a Canadian's gun, it is not a gift. Pay whatever duties, taxes.

However, the BEST thing to do is for him to contact their Dept of State and ask specifically about the above scenario to confirm that it's correct.

Yes, he can bring in LOTS of ammo w.r.t. Canada Customs.
