Can a Husky 1600 be machined to accept stripper clips?

All this talk of scout rifles has me hankering for one. Anybody know if the husky 1600 has enough meat in the rear bridge to be modified for taking stripper clips?

Anybody know what the the most solid forward scope mount is?

Why would you need "stripper clips" In a 1600?

I think stripper clips are a good addition to a scout rifle. If I were to go custom anyways, why not build it to Col. Coopers specs?

There appears to be enough room on the 1600 to cut a stripper clip guide, so there is no need to weld on an extension. When the bolt is pulled all the way back, the bolt face is well back of the front of the rear bridge. Incidentally, Brockman builds custom bolt guns with the addition of a stripped clip guide as a standard feature. The 1600 carbine is certainly light enough to make scout specs, even with it's 21" barrel.

Where is the rear wall of the magazine box relative to where the head of a cartridge would be when you mill the recess in the rear bridge? Alternately you might consider something like an extended scope base with the stripper slots milled into it. Think custom made. I would look for an action that has them rather than reduce the value of the one you have just as the other boys suggested.

why modify a 1600 when there are plenty of M98s and M96s ready to go?

Because a 1600 is a much nicer action, and I can get a smokin deal on a barreled action. Its not like it is a collectors piece, so whats the big deal?

If im going to drop a couple grand into a custom scout, im going to make sure its a keeper ;)

The barreled action I am looking at is 30-06 with a 24'' barrel. Although not a 308 as Cooper suggested, I dont think the ammo availibilty is an issue and the 30-06 isn't all that different from its little brother. I can't quite decide what barrel length I would go to. Probably 20'', but I see some people leaning towards 18.5. What do you think ?

I am also wondering whether I should go for one fo the aftermarket scope mounts, or a quarter rib (custom like on your 602, or maybe I could get a ruger rail to fit?) allthough If I went to a ruger rail I would be limited to using ruger style rings (such a bad thing?)

Slimbo: If it's yours you can do as you like. Are you also going to cut away the action wall like a military to allow your thumb to push the rounds down easier?
Ralf Martini in Cranbrook could certainly fix you up with barrel mounts or a quarter rib.

I didn't mean to sound snarky, to offence intended:)

I didn't think about the thumb cutout, I wonder if it would be a real hinderance to load the strippers without it.

Slimbo; I didn't take it that way at all. Some of those strippers are fairly tight and can take a bit of effort. The cutout does help because you can get your whole hand around the rifle and move the pressure point of your thumb closer to the root of the thumb and give it a real squeeze to get the cartridges moving. Also makes left hand stripping possible or at least easier to do. Old man Mauser knew a thing or two when he thought all that out. I had a M70 with stripper clip guides and it worked without the cut out so I won't say it's essential. It was usually easier in military Mausers though.

The '06 is a good choice, Cooper's daughter Lindy has a '03 Springfield quasi-scout, but I didn't ever see Dad disapprove in print.

The quarter rib from a Ruger would be both lighter and cheaper, than a steel quarter rib, but you are restricted to Ruger rings. Ruger rings are good, but if you have your heart set on something else...
